Some printer properties grayed out
A strange things is happening:
A Kyocera Mita MF printer is running attached to a Windows 2003 server.
Due to the infamous slow-access bug in Vista (still not fixed in SP1) I had
to tweak the workstations assuming the printer was local, changing the port
to \\servername\printername.
Now the problem - while one workstation can access all the printer features
within its proprietary control panel, another workstation can't: for example
some features, like duplex are grayed out.
I thought it could depend on user privileges so I've upgraded the user on
the faulty pc to "Printer operator". While doing so I could unlock the tab
related to server-side printing defaults, still the duplex options are
disabled.
So I logged in the faulty computer with a domain admin user, and still the
same problem.
I've tried to upgrade the driver, but nothing!
It looks like the faulty PC is assuming that the duplexing feature is not
installed, thus disabling the feature in the control panel.
Any hint?
Re: Some printer properties grayed out
Does the driver auto-configure itself to the printer's feature set? I ask
because we have a Lanier LD032c AIO device and in both XP and Vista, I have
to manually tell the driver what features are installed on the printer - the
number of trays, the duplexer unit, and other "Installable Options" must be
set by hand on the "Device Settings" page.
Re: Some printer properties grayed out
Hello, I am having a similar issue.
I have two network printers (HP 9050N) that I am having an issue with
using Vista 64 bit (actually just one of the printers). All other OS
are not having an issue.
When I try to install this networked printer on Vista Enterprise 64 Bit
I receive the message "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Operation
could not be completed (error 0x0000007e).
When I go to the properties of this printer I get a message stating
that the 9050 PCL 6 driver is not installed and the printer properties
won't be accessible until I install. I install the driver but the
problem persists.
It's strange because I have another printer same model, same settings
and both are shared off of windows 2003 32bit and the Vista machine can
install this and print without a problem.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you....Heather
Re: Some printer properties grayed out
The print processor is HPCPP5r1 and the default data type is RAW. This
is the same on the working printer. Thank you for your help... :)

Re: Some printer properties grayed out
the driver on the server is probably a different version than the driver you
have installed on the client
You can see if setting up the printer on the server as a local printer gets
this working.
Add Printer, Local, Create Local Port in the format \\server\printshare,
select the driver, Next, Next
Re: Some printer properties grayed out
Hi Alan,
This works without a problem however I can not use this resolution.
I work for a company where we charge people to print and if we do the
local printer option that allows them to print directly to the printer
without paying.
Re: Some printer properties grayed out
Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks...
Re: Some printer properties grayed out
the job still goes to the print server.
Re: Some printer properties grayed out
It does but we use a program called pcounter so when someone prints it
goes through the pcounter port and appears on a screen where they have
to select their name and swipe a card that has money on it before their
printout will print. Therefore, if we create the local port the
printouts just come out and then they are not charged. Thank you for
all your help...it's much appreciated.
