Hi,
I have this problem for last 3 months on 1 of my PC.
well every time i start this machine (XP pro), it reaches to the windows start up or login screen & restarts its a self restart.
I dont know what is this problem!
I know i dont have any virus since i have scanned this machine 3 times till now.
Anybody out there know about this problem?
Do you know what brand of hard disk you have? As there a few software tools from hard drive companys to test your system but as you said it may be damaged.
boot up with the windows xp cd. you will need to change the first boot device in the bios to cdrom. save settings and restart your computer and the comp will boot to the windows xp cd.
then on the main console, choose repair. then a black command prompt screen appears. it will ask you for an admin password but if youd dont have one, just simply hit enter and it will skip it.
then in C: type in "chkdsk /r" without the "". this should take a bit and after the process has finish, type in "fixmbr" without the "" as well. it should only take a second and afterwards, reboot the computer and try to boot into windows. good luck
