Windows updates will not install
I picked up my computer from the shop a few days ago after a re-build of the
OS system (XP Home). While in the shop I let them install Norton AntiVirus
2008 and Webroot SpySweeper, but nothing else.
Now that I am at home, I keep getting the message that updates are ready for
my computer. I instruct it to download and install (Express Install) the
updates.
A few seconds later, I get the message that:
Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2
(KB936181)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB951748)
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - July 2008 (KB890830)
Update for Windows XP (KB951978)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB950759)
cannot be installed.
I thought that either NAV or Spy Sweeper were blocking it. I turned off
SpySweeper (but can't figure out HOW to turn off NAV) and tried again
(actually tried six times) with the same results.
Don't I need these updates? And if so, what are some suggestion for
resolving the problem.
Thanks in advance.

As many will tell you - ignore the title and symptoms listed in the article
referred to. Do method 1 and 2 and see if it fixes your issue whether or
not you repaired anything.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144
Try method 1 and try to update*.
If fails - try method 2 and try to update*.
*try to update:
- Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
- If it asks you to install anything before you see a selection of "Custom"
or "Express" - do so.
- Once you see the "Custom" or "Express" selection, choose "Custom".
- Scan for updates.
- When it lists what it finds - install the critical ones.
- You are generally safe doing the Optional Software Updates. I suggest
avoiding the Optional Hardware Updates completely.

Method 1 worked perfectly, and I'm back in business. Thanks for the help.

Windows updates will not install
Last night I reinstalled XP pro, then installed SP2 and sucessfully
downloaded and installed SP3. When I ran auto update this morning I find
that 18 updates have downloaded but every time I try to install the updates
within 30 seconds I am presented with a message 'The following updates did
not install' and the lists all 18 updates:
Security Update for Flash Player (KB923789)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB938464)
Realtek AC'97 Audio
Security Update for Windows XP (KB951748)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 for Windows XP (KB953838)
Security Update for Outlook Express for Windows XP (KB951066)
Update for Windows XP (KB952287)
Update for Windows XP (KB951072)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB950762)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB951698)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB950974)
Update for Windows XP (KB951978)
Windows Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP
Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - September 2008 (KB890830)
Cumulative Security Update for ActiveX Killbits for Windows XP (KB953839)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB946648)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB952954)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB951376)
I am not given any error codes or any explanation as to why the updates
failed to install. SP3 was fine so why not these ?
I need to go on to install MS Office plus all my other software but don't
really want to until all security updates have been installed.
RE: Windows updates will not install
I have the same problem would be grateful to receive a solution also.

Bye,
Freudi
RE: Windows updates will not install
I had the same problem myself yesterday. I found out how to fix it on my
computer. The resolution was to re-register Windowa Update DLL.
On your computer, click START, click RUN, type cmd. and then click ok
Type the following commands and press enter after EACH command (there is a
space right after the 32 in each command)
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
Once I did this, I started the update a gain and it worked. I hope this
helps you!
Re: Windows updates will not install
Thanks Freudi, you saved my day. Regards, VSH

You may want to read the whole thread. And yes, you may also want
to use a newsreader software (i.e. Outlook Express, Thunderbird etc.)
to read and reply to postings from newsgroups. Don't use your silly
Webinterface which claims to be a forum but is only mirroring these
postings in newsgroups.
Bye,
Freudi
