KB951748 Problems
I installed Windows Updates KB951748 & KB890830 this afternoon. I have
Windows XP SP2, IE 7.0, Firefox & Zone Alarm (free version). After doing a
re-start I was unable to access the internet. I had to do a system restore
to gain access.
Please Microsoft come out with a fix for whatever the problem is with this
critical update.

RE: KB951748 Problems
Connie, it is Security Update for Windows XP KB951748 that is causing the
problem. I could connect to the Internet, but not download any web pages or
mail from my server. I uninstalled that one only and here I am on the web
again!

RE: KB951748 Problems
Hi Connie -
It's due to a conflict with ZoneAlarm Firewall, which I suppose you have
installed.
Easist ways to correct this -
you can either:
A - Remove KB951748 using Control Panel's add/remove program (and then
restart)
0r
B - Set Zone Alarm to "Medium" instead of "High".
And then wait for the bug to be fixed by either MS or ZoneAlarm.
There are "work arounds" but unless you're _really sure_ of what you're
doing and know your way around PCs, registry settings, etc. , I'd go with A
or B.
Best wishes!

RE: KB951748 Problems
Hi,
I worked around the issue by first looking at my ZoneAlarm Firewall logs,
noting all blocked outgoing connections under destination and taking note of
the ports at the and of the ip address (those are the numbers at the after
the colon 65.54.191.188:xxx) Most critical for web surfing is port 80. There
are many others that will impact other functions on the web, be it your email
service, secured internet sites etc. So anything that does not work as it
should is likely being blocked.
Once you know them, go to the firewall tab, Internet Zone Security, click
the custom radio button, next scroll down to Allow outgoing TCP ports, check
it off and add the port numbers that you find in the logs seperated by a
comma. Apply the changes and you should no longer have any problems.
While setting the the trusted zone to medium security, unintalling Zone
Alarm or other suggestions go, IMHO, they leave you too vunerable and I feel
are risky options.
Hope this helps!

RE: KB951748 Problems
Yowser!
What an annoying update..
I ran a standard windows update on a corporate windows 2003 std edition
server with sp2, and couldn't access the internet at all.
There is no firewall software on the server at all, and the windows firewall
service was off and set to disabled..
I could ping public IP addresses such as my ISP DNS servers, but no internet
browsing until this update was removed.
I noticed when I removed it, the update changes something in the DNS api
DLL, which it must put back.
Probably a good idea to remove this update from being deployed MS, as it may
affect users who have windows update set to automatic, and can't figure out
why they can no longer use IE..
Cheers.

RE: KB951748 Problems
The update KB951748 is sure a pain, I removed it from the Add and Remove
Programs then restarted the computer and I was able to connect to the
internet with the Internet Explorer again. However, when ever I shut down my
computer the update install again and when I restart the process needs to be
repeated. I even have my computer set to notify me when updates need to be
installed rather than automatic. I'm yet to figure out how to permenantly
delete this update or prevent it from comming back.

Update or uninstall your Personal Firewall application and use the
one coming with Windows instead.

Re: KB951748 Problems
I am having a search suffix error which I read uninstalling this KB fixes it. I have the KB as in cygwin here, I see it listed...
$ systeminfo | grep KB951748
[180]: KB951748 - Update
but it does not show in add/remove programs EVEN when I check the "show updates" checkbox :( and then it gets worse, I try to go to
C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$\KB951748
and click spuninstall.exe there and get "This application has failed to start because UPDSPAPI.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem"
Well, inside that folder above there is an update folder with that dll and if I move that down one level it does run but talks about removing "windows XP ". Notice the extra spaces!!!! I am a software developer and that means it read from a file to get some name like KBxxxx so most likely it's not going to work. Why is it all hosed up to begin with?
Any ideas how I can uninstall?
thanks,
Dean

Re: KB951748 Problems
Hi deanhiller,
If you have installed Zonealarm then turn it off, its the problem. Then try to uninstall the update again. Look in the windows folder for a $NTUninstallKB951748$ folder. Or Either the .inf file is missing from the update package or the WINDOWS\$hf_mig$ subfolder had some contents deleted and can not determine the proper update branch. The branch is referring to GDR or QFE. This KB discusses those branches: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824994
