Ethernet connection between Vista/XP
I have a Windows XP based desktop at home and recently bought a new Dell laptop that came pre-installed with Windows Vista Home Premium. I don’t have any router at this place. What I want to do is transfer some files from XP desktop to Vista laptop using Ethernet cable. As I said I don’t have any router or something to connect them on network, is there any way we can transfer files from one desktop to another laptop using lan cable over Ethernet? Please help.
Re: Ethernet connection between Vista/XP
Yes, you can do it but there are many things you will need to do such as both computers should have the same workgroup, both computers should have same user account as well as password, both should have same subnet as well like 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 using 255.255.255.0. Apart from these, you can make use of cross over cable. If they are capable of 1 Gbps, get a CAT 6 cross over.
Now disable all firewalls and Antivirus, setup a share in Windows for each drive you want to see. Now you can transfer the files between two computers. Note, you can only Copy /paste. Don’t try to move or cut paste.
