Migrating Local User Profiles from one domain to another

We are migrating from Windows NT4 Domain to Windows 2003 with Active
Directory.

One question on migrating the computers.

When migrating we are using a different name than on the NT Domain.
Is there a way to migrate the user's computer profiles (local) from DomainA
to DomainB so that the user's do not loose all of their settings?

to let me know.

Based on my research, there are several methods to achieve the goal as
following:

Method 1: ADMT (When using method 1, we recommend to use Replace mode
instead of the add mode in ADMT.)

If you have not migrated the user accounts to win2k3, I suggest you use
ADMT to achieve this goal. ADMT - the Active Directory Migration tool, has
the ability to "translate" account security information. The following link

You can see this function in ADMT is not in computer migration wizard, it
is in Security Translation Wizard.

Method 2: Moveuser.exe
=========================

The Windows 2003 Server Resource Kit has a tool "moveuser.exe" that will
re-associate a profile with another user account. It's specifically for
this scenario where you need to move a profile from local -> domain. One
thing to note is that this can't be done while the user is logged on. It
can however be done remotely so it could be scripted.

XP, so it won't help with NT 4.0 or Windows 2000. But it does point at the
direction of the future.

Method 4: Copy the user profile (method 4 is for 2k or above client machine)
=========================
If manually copying profile is acceptable, you can use the Copy to function
to copy the local profile to domain user profile. Please use the following
steps:

1. Log the user onto the new domain once to create the his/her user
profile and to add the path to it in the ProfilesList registry key
2. Log off as the user and log in as an administrator
3. Copy the user's profile
4. Right click on My Computer and go to Profiles
5. Once in Profiles, use "Copy To," to copy the original profile to the
new profile's path. Also, use "Permitted to Use," to give the new user
account permission to use the copied profile.
6. Log off as the administrator and logon as the user

Note: You may find the copy to button is grayed out. If so, please refer to

Thank you, thank you, thank you.
This helps us greatly. We could not re-migrate but we are able to use the
migrateuser.exe. This will save us a bunch of time. We are trying to get
this to work remotely but are getting an error (no biggie).

One other thing I forgot.
When we migrated the computers we did an 'Add' so when the users log into
the network they can choose from the Old Domain, New Domain, and Local
Computer. Is there a way to remove the Old Domain from the Choices?

I'm very glad to hear the suggestions are helpful to you.

Meanwhile, you want to know if you can remove the old domain option form
the Choises.

Based on my experience, you cannot remove it because you have established
the trust between these two domains.

i want to transfer a computer from one domain to another.
one user has been moved from a sister company with a domain to another with another domain but both sister companies are under the same main domain

There is a tool called as Profile Migrator 1.1. This tool allows you to migrate a user from domain to another. This is the new version which comes with various fixes. You should try this one and then check. The tool also comes with a number of options that can allow you to setup a automatic function for the migration process.
