SBS 2003 to Server 2008/Exchange 2007
We are in the process of moving our location and are in need of moving
from SBS to something with more CALs. I want to make this as seemless
as possible for the end-users.
We are currently on SBS 2003.
My plan:
Purchase new 64 bit server with Server 2008 and Exchange 2007.
Add new server to existing domain.
Move/migrate exchange from SBS to new server.
Make sure the user info and and Group profiles move to the new server
(not sure how to do that)
Remove the SBS, and promote the new 2008 to DC.
Possibly rename the 2008 to the same name and IP as the old SBS (so
outlook users do not have to change anything)
Would that be the correct route? If so, what am I missing? (Looks
easy on paper)
RE: SBS 2003 to Server 2008/Exchange 2007
As your business grows and your needs change, you can use Windows SBS
Transition Pack to convert your Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2
license into standard licenses for each of the individual server components

.mspx
To migrate Active Directory Domain Service and related profiles and folders
from SBS 2003 to Window Server 2008:
1. You can join this new Windows server 2008 to the current domain as an
additional DC.
2. Use FSMT (File Server Migration Toolkit) to migrate files and folders to
the new DC.
3. Use USMT (User State Migration Tool) to migrate user profiles to the new
DC.
4. Install Exchange 2007 on the new Windows Server 2008 server.
5. For this is a migration issue, just move the mailbox from former
Exchange Server on SBS to Exchange 2007 with new organization. If you want
to keep the organization, try to do the transition actions.
6. Finally, demote the old SBS 2003 and make it offline

Also this is a migration or transition of Exchange server issue, you can
try to post in SBS and Exchange Server Newsgroup to get more information
from support engineers who have a good knowledge of them.
Re: SBS 2003 to Server 2008/Exchange 2007
Did this help?
I am getting ready to do the same thing and would like to make sure it work for someone in a similar situation.
Re: SBS 2003 to Server 2008/Exchange 2007
Hi
This is process I am up to as well.
Have set up a new box running Win 2008r2 as main domain and want to transfeer exchange and user groups from old box running SBS 2003, so is this toolkit the right thing to use?
Thanks
