Vista DNS Problem

I have newly installed Vista on my computer and I am not able to access the internet. I have got an HP Compaq nx9420 and have up to three NICs available to me:

1. on-board cable (Broadcom NexXtreme Gigabit)
2. on-board wireless (Intel Pro/100 3945 abg)
3. PCMCIA wireless card (LinkSys WPC300Nv2)

All of them have the same issues, like the network connection comes up as Local Access only. I am able to see other devices on the local network but I cannot see the internet. Can anyone please help me out? Thanks

Try to follow the below solution and see if that works:

1. First of all go to your router setting. Or connect an XP machine to the router.
2. Do ipconfig /all on the XP machine. Get the DNS server name
3. Go to the LAN CONNECTION. Go to properties on the IPV4 connection. Click ADVANCED tab. Enter the DNS server name manually.
4. After this, I was able to access internet. But my trouble is - I switch between multiple networks !! So, everytime I come home, now I have to enter the DNS again !!

Did you try to diable the IPv6 and checked if that has worked? You may also need to post the results of the ipconfig /all and nslookup here.

Hey guys, I've been studying this problem a bit at where I work. Here's a setting I've changed that seems to make a difference.

Go into "Network Sharing Center"

Click on "Manage network connections"

Select "Properties" for the interface you're using.

Select the IPv4 selection and click properties

Click the "Advanced" button at the bottom of the window

Then click on the WINS tab and at the NetBios settings at the bottom select either "Enable NetBios over TCP/IP" or "Disable NetBios over TCP/IP". I've only tried this on the former.

Then hit ok and see if that makes a difference.

What I'm seeing on my traces is after the client learns the DNS entry and sends out a DHCPINFORM packet which the DHCP server responds to again. It's confusing our DHCP server a little. I don't know if this is the same problem you all are experiencing or not, but I figured I'd share it. Please let me know if this makes a difference.

The problem that you are facing can occur because of a difference in design between Windows Vista and Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). Specifically, in Windows XP SP2, the BROADCAST flag in DHCP discovery packets is set to 0 (disabled). In Windows Vista, the BROADCAST flag in DHCP discovery packets is not disabled. I just moved to a new place and for past three days I kept getting the same error with DNS configuration trying to connect to the router provided in the house, wired or wireless. My computer can always connect to the router with only local access.

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium (x32), which could connect to other networks just fine before I came to this new place. The router is a linksys WRT54G connected to a linksys RT41 BU. (I'm not sure why)

Here's my ipconfig /all with everything in Tcp/ipv4 set to automatic.

On the status page of the WRT54G, internet IP address is 192.168.15.100, router Default Gateway is 192.168.15.1, DNS server is 192.168.15.1 which seems to be correctly configured by the RT41 BU DHCP.

However, on the status page of the RT41 BU, IP address,default gateway and DNS server are all 0.0.0.0 . I don't know much about networking, so I'm not sure how to take this.

The weird thing is I actually got internet access once right after I manually set my computer's DNS server to 192.168.1.1 yesterday. Unfortunately someone accidentally pulled the power on WRT54G and I never could replicate it after that.

I started to think maybe 192.168.15.1 is not the right DNS server. so I tried to ping some IP addresses and found out I couldn't connect to any external addresses. Is there a way to find out my DNS server address for sure?

I've also tried various methods mentioned on the internet. I've disabled Tcp/ipv6, removed 3rd party internet security software, changed the DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag register. I've reseted winsock and tcp/ip and tried to manually input DNS address, including some public DNS addresses. Nothing seems to make any difference. (public DNS simply won't connect.)

If not for the one moment of internet access yesterday, I would put the doubt on the modem or my ISP. But it actually worked really well before someone pulled the power. Now, I don't know what to do anymore.

Any tips would be appreciated.
