Suddenly My Windows XP Pro Is Not Genuine

Sad to say, I'm not the first, but my 2.5 year old copy of XP Pro SP2 is
suddenly "not genuine" according to the latest WGA (12/07).
I went and installed all the updates and rebooted as directed. I started
Media Player 10 and it said there were updates so I clicked okay. Well it
installed MP-11 even though the banner at the bottom of the page said
10.0.0.5262 or something like that. After rebooting it took me to a MP-11
screen saying I had to Validate (again). I cancelled it, and uninstalled
MP-11 and it rolled back to MP-10, or so I thought. After rebooting as
directed MP-10 wouldn't run (internal application error) so I went to MS to
download MP-10 again. When the Validation started it failed and told me my
copy wasn't genuine and may be counterfeit, and for only $149 I can get it
"Validated" by MS.
Can someone tell me the files I need to delete/fix so I can stop this damned
annoying balloon that keeps popping up.
I tried the validation tool and it showed the last 5 digits as I entered
them more than two years ago off of the genuine Win XP CD/cert. (Yep, I got
the CD and the T-shirt).
Can I go and restore a known good setting from November and eliminate this
problem, or is there a file or registry entry that needs to be neutralized?
Any help is deeply appreciated...

Rename the following files:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Windows Genuine
Advantage\data\data.dat

ANd if you have Office

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Office Genuine
Advantage\data\data.dat

Then run MGADiag.exe (Windows Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool). If you
don't have it,download it from MS web-site. This will re-check and build
the data.dat files.

Thanks for the tip. I renamed the data.dat files and ran the MGAdiag.exe and
new data.dat files were created. Unfortunately it didn't fix the "not
genuine" problem. Here are the results. I noticed that the validation status
showed "Geographically blocked PID" in red, whatever that means. Hopefully
that's a clue.

I then tried running the MS Product Key diagnostic tool,
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/sel...tructions.aspx, but this told me my
25-digit product key was not for this product. I was able to get Media Player
10 off of my desktop and installed it on my laptop so at least that's working
fine now.
Any new ideas would be appreciated as this sudden problem has me stumped.

The main difference between mine and yours (besides the Geograp....PID
problem) is your's fails on verifying the WgaTray.exe.

This is absolutely necessary for Validation to work. Did you or someone
remove it or rename it?
If you have Microsoft Office 2000 or less version, the Office Validation
fails (like mine) since the is no validation for it.

Luther seems to have a handle on this stuff. Today seems to be my first day,
after 2 years, of not having genuine software. I am not computer savy, which
means I am old and only learn from doing specific things. I have no idea what
it is I am doing. I have E mailed MSN since I have both disks, Windoes XP and
SP2, but can not find that crummy label with the codes on it. I tried to
solve the problem by downloading SP2 from the disk but the error is still
here.

i am on a PC. Simple device but I did notice that the three"Fixes"
Microfsoft told me to try all included buying Vista. Is this a scam to sell
their new software?

Don't reinstall just yet. There are ways to find your product key. Sorry I
don't have the links handy, but someone should be along shortly to help.
