Looking through my user accounts on Vista Ultimate Final, I noticed a new
account that I had not set up, it is called "ASP.NET Machine Account". I
also see that it is password protected. Does anyone know why Vista decided
to set up an account by itself? I also have no idea what the password is,
any ideas?

Okay, just read an article by Soumitra Sengupta about this, so I know why it
was created. Now my question is, can I safely delete it?
No. It is needed by any ASP.NET based applications that you might have
installed.
But it is there even when IIS is not running, or even installed. There must
be some function for it being there.
I have about 4-5 applications I use that will install the dot net framework
if it is not already installed. You may not need it now, but you will. Leave
well enough alone. Some may even say to allow the O/S to maintain/monitor
itself, with little assistance from you.
But the ASP.Net machine account would only be used if you are locally
hosting web pages that run under ASP.Net. I don't know of any applications
that do that, only developers who are writing their own.
Do you know of any such type applications? The only folks I know who
need/use that account are developers who are hosting their own applications
on their PC's rather than on a server.
Instead of deleting it, just in case in the future you find you want it, I
recommend you disable the account. That makes it easy to recover, by
enabling it, but doesn't allow the account to be utilized by anything.
Then delete it if you feel comfortable doing so. I see no problem with it on
my computers, either Windows XP or Vista. I tend to leave things alone. My
attitude is they are there for a purpose, either current or unforeseen. If
it ain't broke why break it
My experience is that the account is added when .net is installed. In XP, I
deleted it years ago/everytime I build a new PC and install .net. Never,
never an issue.
I think that simply means that the account can be created but for no
specific function.
I have a few web based apps that I use locally on network. I seem to have
that account on my Vista machine at the moment, but do on two XP machines
and my Windows 2003 Server.

There are other programs that you can run on your LAN for file sharing and
video streaming that need it.
I can't delete it on my machine as I do develop ASP.NET applications on my
machine. But the users of my apps do not need the account on their machines
since they run my applications from a web server.
You are correct, it is there for a purpose, but unless you are developing or
hosting ASP.NET web applications on your machine then you don't need that
account. That is its purpose, to be the account that these ASP.NET web
applications run under. My attitude I guess is different from yours. I
prefer to understand what the purpose of something is and then make an
informed decision about what to do with it.
That's because when the .NET framework is installed it creates the account
whether it needs to or not.

don't use it myself.
Nope. That is a .NET app that needs the framework, but it doesn't need the
ASP.NET user account to be enabled or even exist.
I have the same problem, but cannot delete the .NET framework account or
delete the program, because my Vista system asks me for the ASP.NET Machine
Account password, which I have never set. The passwords I use on my PC are
not working. At this moment, i cannot install programs or delete things. I
cannot get thge account off because then it asks for the same account.
.NET framework was installed after a windows update in XP and after
updating to Vista, it was updated to .NET framework update 3
I tried to install Vista again, but you gen guess, it asks for the same
password again. I even tried to install good old XP, but thats not working
because the start-up disks are not working anymore. Who can help?
Im having the same problem as i have a asp.net machine account that i did not create and it is blocking access to programs data and games.Also the
account does not show up on my user account page.
A popup appears saying windows needs permission to continue and asks
for the password that was never created.
Anyhelp with this problem will be apprieciated.
Hi, folks!
I have come to the end of my proverbial rope with this incident myself. I now have the ASP.NET Machine account as the administrator of my computer and am no longer able to do anything or make any changes that have administrator permission required.
Every time I try to save a file or install an application, I am prompted to enter the administrative password for ASP.NET Machine.
Is there a way to find out what that password is?
If not, is there a way to fix this situation so that I can be in control of my computer once again?

Hello, again, my Friends!
After a grueling amount of blog study and mostly a painful gauntlet of trial and error, I unveiled a solution to my ailing predicament. I will explain the process that I used to recover control of my laptop and bring to ruin the oppressive reign of the communist ASP.NET Machine account. I must, however, shed a glimmer of light on the fact that this procedure was used to correct my situation and may not be a necessary means to rescue you from your particular folly.
- Shut down your computer
- After 10 seconds have past, turn your computer back on
- Before anything loads (Windows Logo or even the white cursor), press the F8 key to enter the Advanced Boot Options
- Smell your boot
- Select "Last Known Good Configuration (advanced)"
This will launch a type of wizard (not a magical one) that will give you options to select from. You want to restore everything to a time that is before the communist takeover.
Note: You will not lose files from users’ documents but you will lose any changes or configurations made to your computer prior to this so before beginning this process, you may want to save downloaded or installed programs that you don't want to lose.
Note: You should not attempt to wipe your bottom with only a single square of 1 ply toilet paper. This can cause a major catastrophe that will leave mental scars in your life for years to come.
After I finished restoring my laptop to the "Last Known Good Configuration", I restarted my computer, ate a pancake, and I was back in control of my life again. The ASP.NET Machine account was no longer in sight anywhere on my computer and I lived happily ever after. The end

There's no way we can know what didn't work for you, what the original
problem was, or can offer you any more help because you are not posting on
a real forum as you think you are and you didn't quote any of the thread to
which you are replying. You are using a web interface that leeches Usenet
posts and most of the rest of us are using real newsreaders. We don't see
what you do. If you want to participate in Usenet, the better way is to set
up a newsreader. This is very easy to do and I'll give you information
about that below. If you prefer to use a forum, then here are two excellent
ones
Since you are using a web interface, you may not realize that this is really
a newsgroup. You will get far more out of this resource if you learn to use
a newsreader. There are many good newsreaders for Windows, but you can use
Outlook Express (XP) or Windows Mail (Vista) since you already have it.

i have vista premuim
i use windows xp home edition. i had encrypted a few word docs and now i cannot access them as the prompt says that i do not have privilege/access is denied! tho i am the administrator and have complete right!!! then i noticed that there is a new account asp.net machine a.. and it is on limited access. does this hv anything to do with my files being inaccessible. also when i tried to remove the password to the asp acount- the prompt said the following- "you will lose all your efs encrypted files..." so i panicked and did not change it; and when i tried deleting it - it said that the machine can save my docs etc into a new folder...
when i right click and go into the properties of the docs - there is no tab that says security so that i can retrieve ownership of the file when i log on as admin... all i get is the encrypt option which i tick and then try to decrypt the docs - but am not allowed to as i dont have access... grrrrr...
the docs that i have encrypted are worth 4 yrs of my life - my film scripts and so if i lose them i will probably die... so please somebody out there help me.... do i delete the asp account?

i am using xp professional... not home... my bad... all i did was right click on the doc... properties... attributes... advanced attributes... and the prompt (pic 3 in my post) and clicked on "encrypt contents to secure data"... that is it... no 3rd party program... office word 2007 (12.0.4518.1014) MSO (12.0.4518.1014)...
i tied to take ownership of a file thru command prompt and it said "takeown is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file"... i had typed in c:\documents and settings\admistrator> takeown/ f d:\personal\filename.txt
i went into safe mode and added administrator and yet hv not been able to access the files when i log back as admin. i think i maybe missing out on something... this is indeed a weird problem... and GTS i use xp pro not home... and the security tab does not come when i right click the file - only general properties appear, and then i can get into advanced properties... tried to decrypt as you can see in the pic previously but not getting access... :(
i am using xp and not vista - i tried taking ownership as i said earlier... i have currently 3 active accounts on my machine (pic sent as ref) - admin, anirban (created as additional admin recently in my efforts to access the files) and asp.net. The anirban admin account i cannot delete as it says that i need to assign another user as admin on the machine before i can change the present to a limited access account. i dont understand why it is saying that when there is already an existing admin account - or then what is it? sorry for the bother guys - but being unable to access my files - its driving me nuts!!!
Exactly how did you encrypt the Word files? (XP Home does not support efs
encryption.) Did you use a 3rd party program, or do you mean you set a
password in Word. What version of Word?
It's doubtful that the the ASP.NET is related. This is created when the net
framework is installed and you should leave it alone.

If you have the savvy, then go to the Command Prompt and take file
ownership.
Also, I don't know why the Security tab is not showing for you, but if
you ever get it to show, then simply go to the file or folder and add
the 'Everyone' group account to the file or folder with full
permissions. That should solve your access denided problems
In XP Home, in order to access the Security tab, you must boot to Safe
Mode.
Well, that admin account that you're using is not the admin account that
has full rights. There is only one admin account that has full rights on
Vista, and it's the hidden admin account, which the one you're using
doesn't inherit full rights from the hidden account. The hidden admin
account on Vista is the same admin account on XP that has full admin
rights, but no other admin account on Vista can inherit rights from the
hidden account, upon account creation, like it does on XP.
The simple fact is that there is another user account on the folder or
file that doesn't have full rights, and it's superseding your admin user
account that is not a full-rights admin account.
To circumvent the problem easily, one can put the Everyone group account
on the file or folder with full rights and gain access, using a non-full
rights admin account. Or one finds the user-account on the file or
folder that is superseding the non-full rights admin account and make it
match the rights of the admin account.
Then why are you posting an XP issue in a Vista forum?
