Career in Industrial engineering in India

I am a graduate in Physics with First class from Mumbai University. My interest lies in managing an industry. For that I researched and found that Industrial engineering is a proper course. So my question is for the people who have knowledge about this field. What is the scope after doing Industrial engineering in India? What will be the course that I will or can apply for? Any knowledge about institutes that provide these courses?

Industrial Engineering is that branch of engineering that deals with optimization and management of complex and sophisticated processes or systems. Its knowledge is used for managing, developing, analyzing, evaluating & integrating system of people, resources, capital, energy, knowledge, information and many such factors. The main aim of an Industrial engineer is to maintain Consistency and increase Productivity of the organization he/she works for.

This course ducats a person about the principles of mathematics, statistics, physical & social sciences and methods of engineering design to predict, evaluate & specify the outcome of any process, system or action. The main focus of this course is that on operation management using extensive mathematical proficiency and usage of quantitative methods. If mentioned in brief, the course provides with knowledge related to fields like operations management, management science, operations research, systems engineering, manufacturing engineering or ergonomics and human factors engineering / safety engineering. Depending on the perspective of a person, one can specialize in one of these.

The name ‘Industrial Engineering’ is actually misleading. The original term is ‘Management Engineering’, but as it includes subjects related to Operations Research, Management Science, Financial Engineering, Supply Chain, Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering Management, Systems Engineering, Ergonomics, Process Engineering, Value Engineering and Quality Engineering, it is termed as ‘Industrial Engineering’.

The knowledge obtained from this course is virtually applicable to solve problems in many industries. The job of an Industrial Engineer varies from managing queues at box-office to distributing products worldwide to manufacturing cheaper but reliable products. An efficient industrial Engineer has to figure out a way to decrease the line at box-office but at same time the income shouldn’t decrease or become stagnant. An industrial engineer has to manage the distribution of products of industry over a large map without damage or loss to the products.

For Post-Graduation courses, one has to appear for GATE exam. To apply courses related to Industrial Engineering, the person must be of age above 18 years. The applicant must have passed HSC examination which come under 10+2+3 educational scheme. The applicant must have passed first two years of normal degree related to technology or engineering.
