Hi, guys i have a Dynamic Pool with 6 disks that is configured with RAID 5 (4D+1P) and a hotspare. I want to extend the Dynamic Pool with same capacity and speed with different configuration like 3D +1P and with no hotspare. Will this be possible to do? I have space of 2TB and Thin Provisioning software enabled on disk.
Yes , this is possible but with little impact on the performance. You can add only RAIDs with same type, like you have RAID 5 that can be added to group of RAID5 only. You must have similar size of disk. Same size group are recommended to make a even distribution of performance. This may not help you to give optimum performance if used with lesser performing group and if used with high performance RAID group then it may not use its full potential. A disk spare is not automatically assigned to the group of RAIDs but if you have drive with same type then any pool can use this spare.
I am going to extend the LUNS in my Dynamic Pool. I am also going to add new RAID 5 set of disk having same number, space and speed. I am looking to maintain the performance of the DP by extending space. In your case if you are looking to add disk manually then make sure it is of good design because disk with bad design will only work for some time for you.
