You can try that by renaming or exporting the file in the form of .csv. I am not sure there are any alternative that will allow you to help to export a csv file. But there are tools you can try to lookup on google. Currently there is lot compatibility issue between Excel and Mac office files. But the recent iwork has better fixes for it.
Try to find info on apple forums. There are many discussion made on this topic and the file format is not just limited to .numbers. There are other files also. It is right that that the current office apps will help you to play with many mac file documents. It is necessary to first check the compatibility between two program before exporting the file and running the same.
