The IBM NORC was the first super computer. The word NORC stands for naval ordnance research calculator. It had vacuum tube, it was first generation of computer. It was built in IBM in united states navy’s bureau of ordnance. It was invented in December 1984 and was the most powerful computer of that time.
The memory of this computer stores about 2000 words which was stored in electronic tube that is Williams’s tube. The access time of this memory was 8 microsecond.
The computer was presented to United States navy on 2nd December in 1954. At this presenting ceremony it calculated PI up to 3089 digits and this was record at that time which took 13 minutes to calculate. And it was the main computer of navy till 1958 later modern computer where acquired of IBM such as 700 and 701.
naval ordnance research calculator used about four set of 66 parallel tube for memory and each tube stored 500 words. And after upgrading it become upto 900 words per tube. Which come 3600 words stored in four tube.
It does 1500 operation per second. It take 15 micro second for addition, 31 microsecond for multiplication and 227 microsecond for division. It was the fastest calculation machine at that time so it was named as super computer.
This computer was the fastest and powerful computer at that time from 1954 to 1963. It was built between 1950 to 1954 at Columbia university’s Watson scientific laboratory. It can do 15000 operation per minute and checks error automatically. It had cost around 2.5 million dollars at 1950. A staff of nearly 60 people were required to assemble NORC. The aim of this NORC was to produce calculator particularly suited to the solution of large complex problem.
