It possible to upgrade AMD Athlon x2 7550 to AMD Phenom II X4 920
Well, i am planning to upgrade the CPU that i using currently, but having some doubts regarding the hardware up-gradation.
Actually the thing that made me do this upgrade is because I go around from application to application designing and that exactly need higher configuration to run those application the way i have expected. As the title implies my current configuration includes 2 core AMD Athlon X2 7550 with 2.50GHz but as mentioned it doesn't gratify my requirements. So this is where an upgrade comes in. I'm looking at an AMD Phenom II X4 920 Quad Core AM2. Now I'm upright with computers and know that the CPU has to have matching sockets, which I consider it does, but was about to have you opinion about the same. thus any recommendation regarding this updation will be appreciated.

Off course you can do that but still as far as i know this CPU upgrades will be limited by your motherboard thus it would be better if you simply let us know which motherboard you are using in your machine. in fact it would be far much better if you let us know the specification of your whole machine so that i could recommend you whether is it possible to upgrade the CPU or not.

I would like to recommend you that you should have a glance over the LINK i have mentioned so that you can have idea about the compatibility.
in fact this is not the only concern, in fact you can have a huge list to choose from, there are multiple names mentioned from where you can choose the compatible one. you can simply sort it out from the left pane where you can have to simply mentioned your needs and it will tell you the exact suitable model for yourself.

As it seems like you must be having AM2+ motherboards and let me tell you as not all AM2+ boards support AM3, thus you should try to visit you motherboard manufacturer’s website for further details about the compatibility.

as it seems like you must be having Socket -AM2+ board because 7550 run only on that. And the good news is like the processor that you are expecting also works on the same board.
See you can see it over here.

Hey thanks for the suggestion dude but still i have also heard that while upgrading any hardware in the machine we should also consider the power supply units as well? do i have to upgrade the power supply as well? currently I am having 450 watts CPU.
Anyways see i have mentioned the specification below:
- ASRock 890GX Pro3
- Phenom II X2 7550 BE
- SilenX EFZ 120HA4
- 2x2GB Mushkin Enhanced Redline @1600MHz
- Gigabyte HD 6950 1GB

Yup you are right as sometimes it requires to upgrade the power supply unit as well, as after seeing your specification it seems like after upgrading the CPU 450 watts power supply would not be enough.
In fact, you are also having the graphic card included in the machine thus it would be better if you have the SMPS upto at least 600 watts. I am also having almost similar RIG and i have installed this much watts of SMPS only.

Yeah obviously you can upgrade the processor in your motherboard but still the one that you are about to have is quite higher than what you need i think, you can have too many other option to select from.
