Project 2010 Resources in Custom Column

Hello, My client wants me to split three types of resources, people, equipment, rooms, into three columns in an MS Project schedule, 2010 using custom fields - text.
How do I form a drop down of resources, say 'people' in a custom field and make sure that the conflict function still works?
