I also have external DVD burner. But I am not burning content directly on external drive. I have the habit of keeping content inside disc images which need to be burn later. When I got the blank disc I keep it in the external drive and then I select Drive Utility and open it then I will drag the disc image in to the drive utility. After adding it in the drive utility I give burn order to burn the disc image. I am not using iDVD for burning it. It applicable only if you want to burn disc image trough external drive. And not for directly burning data on external drive.

Hi, I am also having external drive which is connected to iMAC . But my iMac superdrive is also in working condition. I opened iDVD application. Now I have selected a project I kept few days back for burning. Which has the files which need to be burned. I clicked on burn option . the message box pops up to me. Which actually saying that “Choose a DVD recording device your computer have more than one drive capable of burning DVD”. I have selected the external. That’s it my content just burned on the disc using external drive. Does this option message pops up to you while burning using iDVD.

But I can burn using iTunes in my external drive. I am having iDVD version 4.1
Re: How to burn DVD in external Drive in Mac using iDVD
There must be some problem with the software. Therefore it is giving only single drive option still there are two drives are connected quiet strange. Why you can’t created image and then burn it using disc utility. You create disc image in iDVD . First you need to create new project with the content you want in the disc image. Then choose file and in file menu select save as disc image. Now it will save the content in the disc image. After image was created now you can use disc utility to burn the image using external drive.
Re: How to burn DVD in external Drive in Mac using iDVD
As you specified the version of your iDVD is 4.1 which dosent have the option to burn disc to external drives . The version 5 the apple allowing option to burn the content to non superdrive i.e any other external drive. Therefore you are not able to select external drive to the burn. if you want to have option for burning using iDVD you need to apply the patch . Download the file iDVD Egg.dmg.sit this file has some files which need to be inserted into iDVD . Now after applying it you can able to burn content directly to external drive.
