Hi I am having a Dell Dimension 5150 PC.It has Intel Pentium D 930, Core VID: 1.244 V, Bus Speed: 199.5 mhz, Rated FSB: 798 mhz, Motherboard model: 0HJ054 and Chipset: i945P/PL/G/GZ. As the motherboard will not support the Core 2 / Duo processors so I will go with Pentium 6xxx, though. I want to know which will give maximum output a P4 670 3.8ghz or Pentium D 960 at 3.6 ghz.
If you are running a Pentium d dual core 3.0GHz processor then don’t change it to 3.8GHz. Pentium d dual core 3.0GHz is faster than the 3.8GHz. So its not worthy if you change it. 3.8GHz is used with older single core PC to increase the processing speed. So keep the same processor and don’t upgrade it. You can upgrade other components like graphics card, hard drive or RAM. You can put the latest graphics card tht are very suitable for gaming purpose.
I can see your willingness to upgrade your PC. If you are ready to do any thing to swap the processor then, DK594 Cedar Mill 661, 3.60GHz, 800FSB, 2M, C1 is the best for your system. The processor that is mentioned on the previous post will work with the main board but I think Dell does not validate it. All you have to do is load the latest BIOS and install DK594 Cedar Mill 661, 3.60GHz, 800FSB, 2M, C1
Analyzing your computer specification, I think the maximum speed Pentium D you can install is Pentium D 945 processor. Intel lists Pentium D960 but it will not work as Dell has its own custom implementation of the chipset. I have also read in the forum that was quoted by the people who were D960. They said that it was not suitable for Dimension 5150. Truly speaking, upgrading a processor to its higher version does not make any difference in the performance of CPU.
Upgrading the processor or getting the processor of maximum speed and installing it does not make any great difference. I have personally experienced it when I upgraded the processor from original Pentium D805 to Pentium D925. If you are having a 0HJ054 motherboard then you can upgrade it with E510 and it should boot. If you have decided that you have to upgrade the processor then upgrade it with Pentium D 945.
