Missing or Corrupt \windows\system32\config\system

Hi Im trying to fix a Dell dimensions 8400, im getting the error message that windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt

\windows\system\config\system

I have tried to resolve this problem through the recovery console however as soon as I press "1" to identify the area I want to work with in the recovery console I get a

"bad_pool_caller" blue screen.

Has anyone got any ideas how to resolve this??
