Re: Getting itunes via wine
Now the major part is installing iTunes after configuring :
- Launch your browser , download here iTunes 9.2.1 for Windows and save it on your computer.
- Right-click the downloaded file iTunesSetup.exe and click on the shortcut menu, click Open With Wine Windows program loader
- If Ubuntu or Wine not responds, restart your computer. The installation will start from iTunes.
- Follow the instructions from the iTunes installation. It is the same what you do in Windows.
- When the installation is completed by iTunes, you can use the Ubuntu boot menu. For that go in Applications > Wine > Programs > iTunes. The other way is via desktop shortcut to launch iTunes.
Alternatives for iTunes for Linux
Gtkpod
Gtkpod is lightweight GTK software that manages music from your iPod (G1, G2, G3, G4, mini, shuffle, photo) freely if you will. I say this because unlike Gtkpod iTunes to copy music from your hard disk to iPod and iPod to HDD. Gtkpod allows you to add audio files, folders and even create playlists on the iPod. It can also read and modify the existing iTunes database on your iPod, rename audio files, organize music, sort tracks by Artist criteria, genre, album, etc. Detect duplicates and remove them if you wish, synchronize files with a directory or a disk and even work offline and resynchronize your iPod later.
With Gtkpod you can also add folders to your songs and albums from a local disk. But its biggest advantage is that you can copy music from iPod to hard drive, something that you are prohibited with iTunes. What it is not his goal, Gtkpod does not drive musical pieces, and then it must map a drive. For my part I use Amarok which is not bad either and it also allows you to manage music from your iPod, but in a different way with less features (for the iPod of course). You can choose as the XMMS music player (default player), Amarok or better yet, your favorite player). To select a player simply select the appropriate command: Edit> Preferences> Tools> command line to play now.
Amarok
Amarok reads and writes only jailbreaked iPod touch and iPhone sound. Anyone who has no jailbreak should just simply scroll down. Otherwise, Amarok is a very popular alternative to files and music between the computer and the iPod to transfer. Amarok is divided into 6 parts: Context, Collection, Playlists, Files, Magnatune and Devices. The software was developed mainly because of the lack of iTunes compatibility with Unix.
- Double-click and go to Yast Software Manager.
- Tap Amarok in the search box. If Amarok is already installed, the little box already ticked.
- Nevertheless, you should check whether you have the latest version.
- Click Next to download (Install / Update).
CopyTrans Manager
CopyTrans Manager iPod without iTunes, you can transfer your music, podcasts and videos from your PC to your iPod, iPhone, iPad Touch or iPod. This application provides a real alternative to iTunes to manage songs and playlists. You can listen to your favorite songs directly into the software interface. This software is based on our need to manage our iPods faster, better and without having to launch an application to take several seconds to open. One of the parameters of the specification was to create an application does not require installation to able to operate directly from the iPod and therefore on any computer, including where the user does not have administrator rights. It was also that its use is intuitive, including the functions more indispensable for all owners of iPod add songs to your iPod, create and edit playlists (playlists) and organize songs.
You can copy and paste your files from any folder, synchronize your device without any worry and with a fluidity that is not offered by iTunes. And better yet, full backups and custom data from your iPod is possible with CopyTrans Suite.
Songbird
Songbird is an open source alternative to iTunes that is currently in development according to Wikipedia, which is built on Mozilla's XULRunner platform. As a result, Songbird runs on those computers with Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. What I liked was the ease of installation, and clear! to be open source because the development is expected to be great, plus it just threw him a hand there. The main driver of Songbird, mig, has revealed that Songbird uses the VLC plugin for multimedia playback, and SQLite as storage engine for the media library.
Songbird has an extension to use the iPod better. To install it you have to follow these steps:
Instructions for installing Extensions:
- Download the desired extension to a convenient folder on your computer.
- If the file you download is a *. zip file, rename it to *. xpi file. This unfortunately may be necessary if you use Internet Explorer to download the file.
- Open Songbird. Go to File > Extensions.
- Click the install button. Look for the extension on your computer and click Install Now
Banshee
Banshee is undoubtedly the best choice of Apple's iTunes for your Linux. The ability to use plugins make this application a strong competitor with other applications . Banshee is an audio player for GNU / Linux. With Banshee you will find an excellent program for playing music and audio files preferred, the best of this program is that it comes bundled with features that make it unique.
Banshee is able to encode most popular audio formats, listen to music from your favorite CDs and create your own audio and MP3 playlist.
