Dell 740 Memory slot issue
Hi, I have a Dell 740 and in addition to that I have also purchased a new Dell 740 to use in combination with the first. I have total 4 good memory sticks and each of them is of 2 gigs. When I tried to use 8 gigs on second memory then I found that is failed to boot and I have to install the memory in the slot 1 and 3 to boot the system which is total 4 gigs. I want to know that if there any setting in BIOS to do that or I have to accept that it is the problem with the memory slot.
I tried 4x 1 gig in the memory stick but this also works in slot 1 and 3 that also gives me only 4 gigs of memory. Do you know any such BIOS setting? Please help me.
Thank You.
Re: Dell 740 Memory slot issue
You should try one stick of your RAM that is known to be good in each and every slot at a time. If you do so then you will be able to get an idea that what the exactly problem you have. If you have problem with any slot then you can get that slot foxed. This may be one of the possible solutions for the issue. Normally this issue is caused due to bad connection of RAM and the RAM slot. try it and I hope this will solve the issue.
Re: Dell 740 Memory slot issue
I think you should check your motherboards documentation and find out that which configuration of the RAM will be suitable in your case. Before this I have not seen any three stick configuration that is serviceable. If you find the configuration for your system then you should change that accordingly and and I am sure that you will be able to fix the issue on yourself.
Re: Dell 740 Memory slot issue
If only low density memory is supported by your motherboard and you have any high density memory then it will not be detected by the computer. You should check your memory sticks for that. Unluckily high density memory sticks are available in cheap prices but there may be problem if your motherboard does not support them. You will only be able to see half the total of memory.
Re: Dell 740 Memory slot issue
This seems to be issue with your board. Actually this is not the issue because there are some boards which only support 512 MB of RAM in each slot and if you insert more than that then it will not detect the entire memory and you will be able to see less memory than the actual memory you have inserted. Please see to the manual and you will get the clear idea.
Re: Dell 740 Memory slot issue
This seems to be problem with your dual channel kit and you need to switch to any other dual channel kit. Sometimes 3 RAM stick causes the same issue with the RAM. I was also having the same issue earlier and one of friends suggested me for this and I did that because before that I tried all the things and found all are useless and finally this solves the problem. I wish this will help you in any manner.
Re: Dell 740 Memory slot issue
You should shut down your computer and restart your computer. As you press the power key keep on pressing Del button and this will let you to the BIOS setting there find the option for default setting and apply that. This will apply the default settings. There is possibility that the setting in the BIOS may have changed accidentally.
