I hvae a Wireless Router, Sonic TZ 180. Now on my system I have installed Windows Home Server and, in order to make it work I have to always open ports manually. It works fine on LAN but when it comes to WLAN it does not work. So, here, I want to know what should I put in the source field and the destination field in the firewall rules? Or should I go with Microsoft which suggests me to open up the same ports.
There is only one thing that you should make a note of with SonicWall TZ 180 Wireless Router. The problem with SonicWall TZ router is that it separates WLAN from LAN and hence views it as two separate networks having separate subnet.
To overcome this problem you can follow the steps given below:
1. Turn off the wireless radio.
2. Buy a wireless Access Point (AP). I would suggest Netgear, a good one. Also make sure it supports WPA2.
3. Now Install the AP into a LAN port.
4. There you go your problem is solved.

You are using a WIRELESS LAN, ok good , is that wireless LAN using a different subnet? Because, I would like to tell you that the message or the suggestion that Microsoft is giving you is because MS only supports WHS and clients on the same subnet. If they are not on the same subnets then you can make it by adding an LMHOSTS entry for Servername on the wireless clients.
Thank you Santy for your valuable effort and for you Daniel23 I am little worried since I am not in a correct position or say unable to give you a reply for what you have asked but would give you some information regarding what I have here, see I have a LAN, a WAN and A WLAN, all having different Internet Protocol(IP) addresses. Also about the LMHost part what do you want me to do exactly, do I need to change HPSERVER to LMHOSTS?
Before going further I would suggest you to first check if all the clients are in the same subnet. Now in order to check if they're in different subnets, do the following on the WHS, a LAN client, and a WLAN client:
Regarding LMHOSTS, it is a file which is present on your computer that can be used to overcome the issue of Name Resolutions.
- First click on Start, then Run, then type "cmd" without the quotes and click OK.
- Second, type "ipconfig /all" without quotes and press Enter.
- Now after all the above steps are over copy the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway and DNS servers.
After going through all above discussions, I think your WLAN clients are on different subnet.Please do this from a client, click Start, then go to Run and type "msconfig" and then click on OK and hen enter the server name and then click connect. This should allow you to log into WHS. The username will be Administrator and WHS console password can be used.In case of WLAN client go to Start, then Run and then type "cmd". When the console screen appears type "ping hpserver" and press Enter. Here you should get 4 responses in succession. After you get 4 responses, type "ping 192.168.168.110" and press Enter. Again you will get 4 responses. Give it a try and if successful let me know.
