Decrease memory usage in window vista

I have a Windows vista Ultimate Edition , i have a average system specs, i.e p4 with 1 Gb of RAM then also vista working really slow, is there any way that i can reduce the unnecessary RAM memory usage in windows vista ? how do i disable the unnecessary Programs in Vista ? , any tips are most welcome. Thanks...

Remove the unnecessary applications that run at start-up:

1. Click on the start button and select run.
2. In the text box type msconfig and click ok.
3. Once the window has loaded, click on the startup tab and uncheck programs you do not want to start up anymore.
4. Reboot your computer.

Vista uses more RAM because It pre-fetches files so that they start faster. Who cares if it is using 100% of the RAM as long as it gives it up the moment it is needed. Windows XP doesn't have pre-fetch so that is why you don't see this in Windows XP. Do the following to increase Vista speed:

1. Turn off the Vista Aero display by right-clicking on the Desktop.
2. Choose "Windows Classic" or "Windows Standard" from the Appearance Settings screen.
3. Click "Start" and then "Run" and type "msconfig" in the command box. Click the "Startup" tab and remove the chec kmark from every program you do not need to start automatically.
