Excel filename too large

Hi,

I'm currently trying to fix an issue a user in my company has. He has a folder on our network with several excel documents that he cannot open because the file name is too large.

The files are under 256 characters in length and other users can open them.

Word docs in the same folder open fine on his machine.

If he move the files to his desktop they are fine.

I have remoted onto his machine and logged in as myself and the files open with no issue.

Any ideas?

Which version of Excel do you use on your computer ? Do you have any formulae in this particular file ? If yes, first start Excel, Go to Tools, Options, Calculation, set it to "Manual" and click on OK. Now, open the file with which you are having problems. Please have patience because the file size might be too large and wait for around 10 mins and see if it opens or not.

It's Excel 2003 and the file contains no formulas.
