What is PCM down sampling ?

I have a 42” widescreen TV which is connected to my DVD player using a coaxial cable. Recently I am facing some issues regarding my audio. When I called technican, he told to down sample PCM signal in audio options.

What does PCM down sampling ?.....

PCM means Pulse Code Modulation

When your DVD player is down sampling your original PCM signal for improved and better output, it is called PCM down sampling.
If the original signal is at the frequency of 96khz which your amplifier or receiver is not able to handle this signal, then down sampling converts it to 48Khz before resulting it out.

Downsampling is very useful feature when a receiver cannot handle the signal at a particular frequency(at certain level) for output and hence converts /down-samples it to the level it can easily accept for output.

For example, if the receiver cannot handle 96kHz, down-sampling takes it as an input and converts to 48kHz that receiver can easily accept.
