How to port Galaxy Nexus to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

I am starting this thread to share the process of porting new Android 4.1 Jellybean update to Galaxy Nexus. The name of the rom that has been provided in the below steps is for international GSM Galaxy Nexus, model number i9250 and not for other phones. Others having Galaxy Nexus will have to wait until Google makes it available over the air. Before following the below steps just make sure that you are taking a backup of all the Apps and important data along with APN settings , bookmarks, contacts, SMS etc that you might be having in your phone as they will get erased after the new rom is in installed.

First you will have to unlock the bootloader on your Galaxy Nexus. To unlock the Bootloader you have to Download and install Android SDK as well as Fastboot files. You can get the Android SDK from here and Fastboot files from the below attachment. Once you get these files put your phone in fastboot mode. For that you need to Switch off your phone, Hold Volume Up Key + Volume Down Key, press Power button until you see a Android robot with the below test saying “FASTBOOT MODE” in red. When you are done with the same then Extract the Fastboot.zip file in your computer and open Fastboot folder. After opening the folder just hold Shift key and Right click an empty space within the folder and select “Open command window here“. When the command window gets opened then connect your phone via USB cable to your computer and enter “fastboot devices” without the quotes in command prompt. Once the device gets recognized then type “fastboot oem unlock” without the quotes for unlocking bootloader. You may be prompted with a request regarding it in your phone, so click on Yes with the help of Volume button and press Power button for confirming the same.

Once you have unlocked the bootloader on your Galaxy Nexus you can precede with the installation of Clockworkmod (CWM) recovery on your Nexus. For that you need to install ClockworkMod Recovery Touch 5.5.0.4 from here. Just make sure that you are ready with the below Pre-Installation Requirements:
    • Rooted Galaxy Nexus
    • Fully charged battery
    • ADB set up on your PC

In order to set up ADB on your computer you can follow the below steps:
First Download Knives & Forks toolkit in to your system from here. After downloading it go to User Profile folder and Create folder naming”knives-and-forks“and Extract contents of the downloaded zip file in to that folder. Now check out for”Knives-and-Forks-Windows.cmd” and Double-click on the same. When you get a DOS window then you will get a prompt asking for Allow or Deny installation. So just select Yes, Now you will get a Main menu in the DOS window, so at this while just make sure that the your phone is connected to the system and USB debugging is enabled as well. After that Type “1″ without the quotes and hit enter, once the Main menu option gets changed to “Install adb & Device Drivers” then Type “1″ without the quotes and again hit enter. If things goes well then you will get a widow saying Press any key to continue with a Security prompt. So after selecting yes the device driver will get downloaded automatically. When they get installed they will be moved on to Installing ADB with a prompt saying “Press any key”. Once you press key the ADB installation will get tested and you will get a List of Devices Attached having sting of alphanumeric characters along with the letter “device”. This is nothing but your phone, so just type “x” without the quotes and hit enter for closing the command window. When you are done with all this then open a new command prompt and type “adb devices” without the quotes and hit enter. When screen displays “List of Devices Attached having sting of alphanumeric characters along with the letter “device” then it means ADB has been set up on your computer.

Now after setting up ADB you can proceed with the installation of Clockworkmod Recovery Touch on Galaxy Nexus. Assuming you have downloaded CWM recovery image file just rename it to ‘recovery.img‘ and move it to older where ‘fastboot.exe‘ is located. If you have set up ADB following the above solution then fastboot.exe will be located at C:\Users\UserName\knives-and-forks\bin\windows\androidelse it will be in /Tools or /Platform-Tools folder in Android SDK installation folder. Once you are aware where it is then Reboot your phone into fastboot mode holding Volume Up, Volume down keys and Power button. After that Open command prompt from computer and change the directory to the directory having fastboot.exe and recovery.img. Once you are done with the same then type “fastboot flash recovery recovery.img” without the quotes for flashing recovery.img in your phone and reboot the device. After reboot you will have a touch-based version of ClockworkMod Recovery on your phone.

When you have completed all of the above steps then download Filename: bigxie_JRN84D_rooted_busybox_deodexed.zip which is Jelly Bean Android 4.1 ROM and Filename: CWM-SuperSU-v0.89.zip which is Root and Superuser Fix from the web. After downloading these files move them to your SD card of the phone and boot into CWM recovery. For putting the phone in CWM recovery press and hold Volume Up + Volume Down + Power buttons at the same time. After that you can check out for “Restart Recovery option” by scrolling using volume buttons and selecting the same using Power button. Now select “wipe data/factory reset”, select Yes. Now Select “install zip from sdcard”, select “choose zip from sdcard” and check out for bigxie_JRN84D_rooted_busybox_deodexed.zip file and select the same. Once the installation gets completed select choose zip, select “CWM-SuperSU-v0.89.zip file”. When you are done until here then go back and select “reboot system now”. The boot will take some time for the first time, so don’t panic and interrupt the process. If all goes well then it will come up with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
