I have an air compressor and just cleaned out the connector and problem solved! It was in dock mode I suppose. I had the same problems and was about to take it back to the store until I decided to give the air compressor a shot. Hope this helps for all of you

Hai.. i also have the same problem.. ringtone okay.. but sound with other app gone.. especially while watching movie..

at first i thought to much background app open..

here.. after reading the air compressor solution at the connector.. YES>.
thats is where the problem start...

get the usb connector.. connect it to your iphone 4s..
then... try force it to the right and to the left without plug it out from the connector..

no need for you connect it to you mac... the problem solve..for now.. need to find a compressor to clean the connector... the iphone thinks its on dock mode.. some dust maybe blocking the sensor or stuff...

I'm somewhat having the same problem except every ringtone I get after I updated my phone to ios 5.1.1 if I get a ringtone now I can hear it when people call but not when they text the people at apple restored my phone and I thought they fixed it but they didn't they said it might be something with the software of the phone but I'm not too sure
