Well let me tell you that it doesn’t matter whether you are a beginner or an experienced photographer, the Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC is an all purpose lens which offers convenience and features on all levels. I would recommend you to go for the sigma 18-200F3.5-6.3 DC without any doubt. It is actually equivalent to a 24 to 300mm lens in the larger format cameras. It has an impressive range and can deliver stunning images. If you want to purchase it then you can purchase it online from ebay or amazon websites. Just book it and the lens would be delivered to you within 15 days. You might also get some exciting offers. All the best

Firstly make sure which lenses are compatible with your camera. You can look for this on the google website. Just google on the net and search it. Then finalize few off them and decide. As you are having budget issue so I would recommend you to go for the nikon 35mm lens. This lens is fast, light and most importantly inexpensive normal lens for Nikon's DX cameras. As you have mentioned it suits well for your requirements as you can use it in low-light without flash.

nikon 35mm lens are best. It does autofocus perfectly with every Nikon, especially with the D40, D40X and D60 cameras. So you can go for Nikon d3100 camera with nikon 35mm. this lens comes for $199.95. Nikon has made many 35mm f/2 lenses over the years for full-frame FX and film cameras.

Definitely in my view sigma 18-200 is the best and going for it would be a best decision. I would like to mention its features.
    • There is Inner focusing system which eliminates the front lens rotation making the lens highly suitable for use of polarizing filters
    • There are two A spherical glass elements which offers correction for distortion
    • There is two Special Low Dispersion glass elements providing optimum color correction and sharpness
    • It is perfect for capturing small objects and produces a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.9.
    • It has an extremely compact design which weighs approximately 22 ounces and measures just under 4 inches in length
    • A lens hood and front and rear lens caps are included with the lens.

I think 35mm lens is probably going to be much more useful than a 50mm as an all around lens for your Nikon d3100 camera. The difference between an f1.8 and an f1.4 lens is minimal - unless you intend to use it wide open at 1.4. The 1.4 lens is bigger, more expensive.

I would say go for 50mm Nikon lens? 50mm is an FX lens. It works well on FX, 35mm and DX Nikons like the D7000, D700, D3X, D300s and F6. It works great on manual-focus cameras like the F2AS, F3, FE and FA. It has real manual-focus and aperture rings so it works as it should work. I have got the specifications of this lens for you. This lens actually has six elements in five groups.
    • It focuses down to 0.45 meters or 1.5 feet.
    • It takes 52mm filters and the HR-2 hood.
    • It weighs only 5 oz. or 155g.
    • It's 2.6" (65mm) around by 1.7" (43mm) long.
    • It has a seven-bladed diaphragm and stops down to f/22.

The 35mm f/1.8 AF-S has a lot of barrel (bulging) distortion. Nikon could have done a better job. On DX, the 50mm lens becomes a short tele or portrait lens, while the 35mm is a normal lens on DX.

I would suggest you to go for Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC. Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC is designed to use with digital Single Lens Reflex (SLR) cameras and as you have mentioned in the query that you want this for general and for some zoom purpose, so this would be good option for you for sure.
