Iphone 3g to iphone 4 upgrade

I have a 3g with a shattered screen, I want to purchase a iphone 4, what is needed to be done to get the new phone (not purchased from ATT) to recognize the network and contacts that the 3g is currently using ?? Is it just as simple as converting the 3g sim to a micro-sim and installing it into the 4 ??
