Why should iPad get jailbreak?

I have heard a lot about the Jailbreak here and I simply want to know the reason behind this? Also in addition to this I just want to know what Jailbreak exactly is. I have seen that most of the users of the iPhone users have posted that they have jailbreak their phone and mostly I have seen this jailbreaking with the Apple products so my very basic question is what is jailbreaking and what is the need of doing this? Is it really compulsory or is there any benefit of doing this here. Please let me know about this and I will be really happy if you all can point out the solution here for this as soon as possible.

If you are aware of the programmings then you will be able to have the iPad or the iPhone to work in the manner that you want it to work with. But that indeed requires a good amount of knowledge.
