You can do that with the help of dskprobe.exe. This little utility in the Support Tool kit free download via Microsoft. Start and choose the Drives > Physical Drive. Choose the drive to convert a basic disk, click Set Active and uncheck ReadOnly. Then choose Sectors > Read. Accept settings. defaults (begin sector 0, read 1 sector) and clicking on Read. The boot sector (MFT) of the disc appears. In the editor, go to the line 01C0. The third bit should be 42 and change that 07. Select Sectors > Write. Answer yes. Restart and run chkdsk.

Dynamic disks offer several advantages over basic disks. It is for example possible to extend a dynamic volume on multiple disks to create a single volume bringing together the available space on several disks. It is also possible to resize the size of a dynamic disk volumes on the fly without restarting the computer, or even having to disconnect any customers working on the volume.

    Re: Dynamic disk on notebook

It is not possible to make a dual boot on dynamic disks, and even if both operating systems recognize this type of disc. In addition, removable disks, USB connected or IEEE can be transformed into dynamic disks. It is also the case of notebook drives. Also note that a minimum space of 1 MB for the database of dynamic disks is required. Converting a basic disk to dynamic disk is very simple: this is done via the Disk Management console, or via the utility diskpart.exe. This is to select the disk to convert, right click on it, and select the Convert to disk dynamic.L reverse operation requires that all volumes on the dynamic disk are deleted prior to conversion.

    Re: Dynamic disk on notebook

It is possible to create three types of volumes with dynamic disks in Windows XP which are Simple volume, Striped volume and Spanned volume. In the first case, only one disk is converted into dynamic and completeness of its space is used as a hard core classical. With striped volumes, the volume is created on multiple dynamic disks. The data are distributed fairly between each volume, which has the advantage of improving write performance.

    Re: Dynamic disk on notebook

The system volume divided again several dynamic disks are required, however the method of filling is different. Indeed, the data is initially written to disk first, then once it's completed, data will continue to be stored on the next and so on. As the system striping, if one disk fails, all data is lost. The advantage of this type of volume is to be extended as long as space is available on one disk.

    Re: Dynamic disk on notebook

I just purchased a second internal hard drive and I had the same problem: the disk was dynamic. is the solution to convert a basic disk. For that click on Start > Run > and then click on diskmgmt.msc. Then go in the window that opens, you see all the drives present in the computer. Just select the dynamic disk. Right click on it and it did delete the volume. After just a right click again and we convert a basic disk just format after that.
