Please make sure that you are using MP3 VBR OR MP3 (16 to 320 Kbps) format otherwise iphone doesn't have support to Mp3 format to other than this.
iphone supports below eight types of audio format:
1. AAC (16 to 320 Kbps)
2. AIFF
3. AAC Protected (MP4 from iTunes Store)
4. Apple Lossless
5. MP3 VBR
6. Audible (formats 2-4)
7. WAV
8. MP3 (16 to 320 Kbps)

Yes it supports MP3 files off course. It also supports for other audio format such as follows:
- AAC (16 to 320 Kbps)
- AIFF
- AAC Protected (MP4 from iTunes Store)
- MP3 (16 to 320 Kbps)
- MP3 VBR
- Audible (formats 2-4)
- Apple Lossless
- WAV
I have an apple iphone and it support for above all.
