Sometimes Windows updates may cause problems. I recall that one time, an update caused my sound to go out. The solution, simply, is to reinstall the video card driver from the Dell website. If your operating system has just crashed and you cant boot up then this cd will! No matter what operating system you use this eMachines M6400 boot cd will automatically start up and give you a windows like graphic user interface. It that doesn't fix it, I would recommend reinstalling Windows. That doesn't sound like a hardware issue to me.

I have a Dell Precision M6400 with built in webcam and mics, and have been dual booting WinXP and Ubuntu 8.10 for a month now. One more issue is that Whenever I start my laptop the screen resolution gets reset to 1024x768, and I need to manually re-configure my screen. All works under Ubuntu except the dual digital mics. I've played around with the sound settings, (HDA Intel…ALSA and OSS) but to no avail.

eMachines M6400 boot cd will automatically start up and give you a windows like graphic user interface. This interface shows all your M6400 hard disk contents and also your cds and or USB key content. I think that this is perhaps an O/S problem and the answer is hidden somewhere in the settings. Try asking a generic question (about 1024x768 always coming on at startup) in the Microsoft forum. The LIVE CD and does not need to be installed! What this means is that no files are transferred or installed onto your M6400 in any way. This is obviously imperative for data recovery.
