Hewlett Packard seems to be focused on producing more netbooks like HP Mini 2140 netbook, the latest HP Mini model. HP's very recently announced Mini 2140 is available now for you to get one of your very own if you so please. Like the Mini 1000, the Mini 2140 has a fairly large keyboard (92% the size of a full-size QWERTY keyboard) with wide, flat buttons. The mouse configuration remains the same, too: The right and left mouse buttons flank the mousing surface instead of sitting below it, which makes navigating and editing documents more difficult. But at least the mouse buttons on the 2140 are rubberized and rise above the surface, improving the mouse's manageability.



The HP Mini 2140 shares the same basic silhouette as the earlier Mini 1000 and Mini-Note 2133 systems from HP. Because it has an aluminum case, like the 2133, it's a half-pound heavier than the plastic Mini 1000; it's a trade-off that may be worth it, however, as the metallic Mini 2140 feels as if it'll stand up to the rigors of the road better than a plastic Netbook.

The HP Mini 2140 Notebook PC features a simple, refined all-aluminum case for a sleek yet lightweight design. Starting at 2.6 pounds,(1) the fully functional and durable HP Mini 2140 is an ideal companion PC for the on-the-go professional. It features a large 10.1-inch diagonal scratch-resistant HP Illumi-Lite LED display available in either standard or high-definition(2) resolutions, a user-friendly 92 percent of full-size QWERTY keyboard, and a range of hard-drive options including an optional high-capacity 80-gigabyte (GB)(3) solid-state drive.

The 2140 has a few other things in common with the Mini 1000--and with the rest of the netbook market. The base-level version of the 2140 comes with Intel's Atom 1.6-GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive (which spins at 5400 rpm), a three-cell battery, and Windows XP. You can bump up the configuration (as we did) to include a six-cell battery, or you can add a three-cell unit that has 2GB of memory and a 7200-rpm, 160GB hard drive. Even then, the Mini 2140 is smaller and less expensive than the Asus N10Jc.

While the 2140 has all the right moves looks-wise, it stumbled a little in WorldBench 6. The metallic mini-note kept running into issues with Photoshop and as a result of only netted a score of 26. The only other netbook that's scored as low was the equally pokey Dell Inspiron Mini 9.This doesn't bode well for HP's pricey portable (well, pricey as far as netbooks go), but the 2140 wins back points by lasting almost seven hours on one charge. That's good news for frequent fliers.

The HP Mini 2140 keeps mobile professionals ultra-productive by including a small, low-power Intel® Atom processor to enable the unit to run cooler, use less power and improve battery life. It includes a suite of wireless technologies such as integrated Wi-Fi Certified WLAN(2) and optional Bluetooth® 2.0, allowing a variety of ways to access the Internet for email, IM, chat and blogging. An integrated VGA webcam allows for easy still-image capture, web-conferencing or video-enhanced instant messaging with no additional hardware to buy or carry.

It is also a great tool for the classroom. The suite of wireless, multimedia and security capabilities allows students to learn wherever they have Wi-Fi access from the classroom, to the library, to their homes. The HP Mini 2140 can change how students learn today and is the practical answer to providing each student continuous access to a notebook in one-to-one computing.It weighs 2.6 pounds with the three-cell battery in place, compared to the Mini 1000's 2.25 pounds; but the Mini 2140's remain notably svelte, at 1.05 by 10.3 by 6.5 inches.

The only major downer involves a limited capacity to accommodate external devices. The machine has a few handy ports such as an SDHC flash card reader, VGA-out, an ethernet jack and two USB ports. But the USB ports are located on either side of the device, creating a potential problem if you want to plug in an external hard drive that requires a spare USB port to power the device.

HP offers a handful of fixed-configuration versions of the 2140, but we're perfectly happy with the basic $499 model, which has an Intel Atom CPU, 1GB of RAM, and a 160GB hard drive. For $50 more, a smart upgrade might be an identical version with 2GB of RAM, but that comes with Windows Vista Basic. Adding an XP "downgrade" to that model adds another $80 onto that (but also includes a faster 7,200rpm hard drive).

I really like this product it's small, light and looks slick, however I think some people expect too much from this laptop range, they're sub notebooks people! Small but large enough to be useful. The hardware HP choose makes this a useful mini computer for all computing tasks. Hard Drive is large enough to actually load more than just a few files.
