Motorola to build Alexander, Atila Mobile Phone in early '09

Taiwan's Compal Communications will manufacture two handsets for Motorola, codenamed the Atila and Alexander, according to a Friday report. More importantly, the report reveals that shipments of the phones will allegedly be delayed from the original fourth quarter of 2008 launch to the first quarter of 2009. Both cellphones will use the Windows Mobile operating system, support 3G data networks and have built-in Wi-Fi modules.

The quad-band Atila features an iPhone-like 2.8-inch, 240x320 touchscreen and includes the Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system. It will reportedly be Motorola's flagship handset.

The Alexander is believed to include a five- or eight-megapixel camera, as well as assisted GPS capabilities. It sports a full QWERTY keyboard behind its sliding top panel.

No pricing or detailed release information for North America is known about either handset.

    Motorola Atila

It would continue to use Windows Mobile 6.1 but would be Motorola's first ever device to support 3G cellular data over tri-band HSPA that would not only allow it to work in all HSPA areas but to support faster 7.2Mbps downloads and 1.8Mbps uploads.

Few other details are known about Atila, though it will allegedly support Wi-Fi and use a relatively low-resolution 320x240, 2.8-inch touch display. A center control suggests hardware directional control may be possible in place of touch.

Alexander, the device appears to be a slider with a full QWERTY keyboard and will run Windows Mobile 6.1. The apparent slip also contradicts reports that Alexander would have a touchscreen to compete against the iPhone and instead shows a directional pad, which has been present for every existing Q series phone.

The device would primarily compete against Apple, Research in Motion, and others through sheer feature set. Confirming some earlier details, the leak would equip Alexander with a camera between five and eight megapixels and would also supply assisted GPS for navigation. An NVIDIA Tegra APX chipset would more than compensate for the slow video performance of the Q 9 and allow advanced 3D, though whether extras like 720p HD video and HDMI output would be available isn't mentioned.
