I have come across some but am not able to decide which one to use. Have a look at th info for each :

phpBB is a popular Internet forum package written in the PHP scripting language. The name "phpBB" is an abbreviation of PHP Bulletin Board. Available under the GNU General Public License, phpBB is free software. phpBB was started by James Atkinson as a simple UBB-like forum for his own website on June 17, 2000. Nathan Codding and John Abela joined the development team after phpBB's CVS repository was moved to SourceForge.net, and work on 1.0.0 began. A fully functional, pre-release version of phpBB was made available in July.

MyBB is a free bulletin board system software package developed by the MyBB Group. It is written in PHP and licensed as free software under the GNU General Public License. Years ago, Chris Boulton, web34rk and b0ndman started developing XMB. After some time, web34rk and b0ndman left the team and Chris became lead developer of a team with two other developers. Over time, staff shifted again and several developers didn't like the way things were heading. Together, they forked XMB and created DevBB. DevBB was the predecessor to MyBB, a temporary solution for people to use whilst MyBB was being developed. Development teams changed frequently, but MyBB is still here with Chris Boulton as Product Manager since 2002.

PunBB is a fast and lightweight PHP-powered discussion board. It is released under the GNU General Public License. Its primary goals are to be faster, smaller and less graphically intensive as compared to other discussion boards. PunBB has fewer features than similar software, but is generally faster and outputs smaller, semantically correct XHTML and CSS compliant pages. Currently, PunBB runs on a number of operating systems that are able to support the PHP scripting language. To store its data, PunBB relies on either MySQL, PostgreSQL or SQLite.

Vanilla is a lightweight and extensible free/open source forum application developed by Mark O'Sullivan using the PHP scripting language and MySQL database management system. Vanilla grew from the software used by Mark O'Sullivan to run a private forum called "o8". When the private forum was shut down, users petitioned O'Sullivan to release the software publicly. The first version of Vanilla was identical to the old "o8" forum software, but was quickly redesigned for simplicity and the ability to integrate extensions. O'Sullivan released the 0.9 version of Vanilla on July 16, 2005. The software came out of beta as Vanilla 1 on July 1, 2006.

MercuryBoard bulletin board system written in PHP and MySQL. It's object oriented, multi-lingual and uses detailed groups and/or user permissions. It has appealed to those with limited resources or those interested in doing customizations to the code. This is because it takes advantage of the speed MySQL can bring as well as being clear, easy to understand object oriented code.

Simple Machines Forum also know as SMF is a freeware Internet forum application. The software is written in PHP and uses a MySQL database backend, although multi-database support is being developed for version 2.0. SMF is developed by the Simple Machines development team. SMF was created to replace the forum software YaBB SE, which at the time was gaining a bad reputation because of problems with its Perl-based ancestor software YaBB. At the time, YaBB was attributed to causing resource allocation problems on many systems. YaBB SE was written as a rough PHP port of YaBB, and had many of the same resource and security problems of the older YaBB versions. Joseph Fung and Jeff Lewis of Lewis Media Inc., the owners of YaBB SE and the original owners of SMF, made the decision to convert to a new brand and name
