    Unable to overclock AMD FX-4170

Hi, First of, I would like to say that I am new to overclocking. I am using a Asus motherboard and AMD Fx-4170 with 600W PSU. I am using 8gb RAM on Windows 7 operating system. I actually purchased it second hand my friend and at the time I got this system there was some driver problems with it. So, after installing the latest drivers it is now working great. But now I am looking to learn some ways to overclock the Fx4170 processor. I went into the bios and tried to increase the multiplier by .5 but it is creating some problems at the voltage? So can anyone give me some advice on how to overclock it properly? Thanks.

The maximum safe voltage that you should go over would be around 1.5V or low for a 32nm chip only and not more than that. It will be quite high to reach atleast 4.6ghz overclock. Incase if you face any trouble at that voltage then you can try to decrease the voltage to stock and then increase it little by little till the time you get stable tests. I would first recommend you to go as low as 1.25V to start.

Well, I have heard that the stock voltage of AMD FX-4170 processor is 1.4v and it uses 4200mhz stock frequency as well. You will be able to get stable CPU of 4600mhz with 1.5v so you can assume that this setting can be a good voltage for the system. If you would go above this setting then you could probably kill your CPU and it would also be not a safe overclocking.

I think that, since you are learning the overclocking methods, I would recommend you to download CPUz and HWmonitor tools. After that install it and try to set each things to stock and then turn off all the green things, cool and quiet settings, etc. After that you can open Hwmonitor and then run Prime for 15 minutes or so. After you are done with that, you can post the images of the Hwmonitor that was under load and also the pics of the results from CPUz.
