Can I overclock AMD FX8120 to 4.0 GHz?

My new rig is finally assembled:
    • ASUS Sabertooth 990FX AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard with UEFI BIOS
    • AMD FX 8-Core Black Edition FX-8120
    • Zalman CNPS9900-NT CPU Cooler
    • Enermax Platimax 1000W Power Supply

So now I am looking forward to overclock it, I want to know if I can overclock AMD FX8120 to 4.0 GHz. I mean that’s the expectation I am having with it but I don’t know if that’s possible.

Have you tried overclocking a processor before? Do you have complete idea about it? If not than better refer to some overclocking guide first and go through all aspects of it. As far as I am aware AMD FX8120 can be overclocked to 4.0 GHz. I haven’t tried it myself but I have come across people who have done that.

I won’t say I have complete idea about it but I am simply aware of it. I know that I have to Increase the multiplier and voltage accordingly to do a stable overclocking. I have gone through some overclocking guide in this forum and I am aware of the advantage and disadvantage of overclocking. I just wanted to confirm if it is possible to overclock AMD FX8120 to 4.0 GHz or not. I had some words with my friend on this topic and I had got varying response, some said that I should achieve 4.0 GHz without much issue considering my system specification where as some said that I should not go above 3.8 GHz.

See overclocking simply doesn’t depend on the processor you have but it depends on other components like cooler, psu and board as well. Your system specification is quite good and even I don’t think you will face any issue in attaining 4.0 GHz. However while increasing multiplier and voltages make sure that you are keeping an eye on the temperature as well.
You should increase voltage slowly, better make a note of the max voltage from your AMD FX8120 specification and don’t forget to check stability of your system after increasing multiplier and voltage every time.

Thanks for that but my target is just 4.0 GHz, I really don’t want to go above that. I am willing to do a stable overclocking for getting better fps in some games that’s it. I have come across some articles where people have overclocked AMD FX8120 up to 4.6 GHz but I am not interested in taking any kind of risk , my system is quite new and I don’t want to fry my AMD FX8120. I will carry out the overclocking today and will post back my result.
