Thermal paste on a core i7?

    Hi,
i have heard mixed views about putting thermal paste on cpu's.but several problems can appear, such as random resets, freezes, reduction of processor lifespan, and it can even make the CPU burn.I'm getting Core i7 920 and was wonder whether I should buy a thermal paste.Any recommendations and suggestions are appreciated.

    Type of Heatsink:
    1. Standard flat base-plate Heatsinks :
    - Regardless of the CPU Model, if you are using a flat base-plate Heatsink it is recommended to mount your heatsink Vertically, facing the rear exhaust.

    2. H.D.T exposed Direct Touch Heatsinks :
    - The mounting direction for H.D.T Heatsinks depends on the CPU Model.
    - If it is a Core2Quad, the Heatsink should be mounted Vertically as this will enable the exposed heatpipe strip in the middle to be in complete contact over the cores in the Processor.
    - If it is a Core2Duo or Core i7, it should be ideally mounted Horizontally due to the layout of the cores in the processor.

    hi,
Thermal paste is cheap as chips.....clean with isopropyl alcohol and reapply. If your not happy with the layer do it again! Make sure your happy (and make it thin!) then seat your HSF or block or Rad or whatever cooling you are using.

MX2 is the best around at the moment. It's also cheaper (comes in a bigger tube for the same price) and doesn't have a burn in period like Arctic Silver 5.

Whatever you do, DON'T put thermal paste on your CPU + use the stuff on the heat snk. If your using your own, clean up the heat sink first.
