Overheating hp compaq

Hello everyone.
I have an HP Compaq Presario CQ50 (laptop). Here are its feature:
Processor: AMD Turion X2 RM-70 2.0 GHz
RAM: 3 Gb
Hard Disk: 200 GB
Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce 8200M G

My overheating problem arises when I play Counter Strike Source. Suddenly the computer turns off completely (without restart). If I run any application it runs fine? What should I do now? Please help me, thank you

try not block other air vents and that power plan stuff really dosent matter

try playing front of a fan and when u play dont play on ur lap cause there are fans for the cpu and more vents down there help. the coolers powered by USB also suck power from the computers battery therefore making the laptop hoter. nice laptop anyway

It's more likely to just be inadequate cooling than anything else, especially after some after many of the other parts have been replaced. The vents could also be clogged with dust limiting air intake but I imagine that would be one of the first things they checked.

I can imagine why they might be unable to replicate the behaviour. An air conditioned repair lab is likely to be a far cooler environment than normal room temperature (especially this week ). You might try insisting that they test and replace/upgrade the fans and heatsinks. That won't exactly cost them much so I can't see any reason for them to refuse.

Let me ask you, how old your notebook is (warranty?) If there's still warranty I would contact your local Compaq/HP supporter for help.
I had to fix a notebook today with same symptoms like yours. The fan didn't start up with cooling down the CPU... no wonder cause a small electric cable was out of the jack at the mainboard .

To answer your question about that thermal pad and thermal grease. Usually all computers (desktops, notebooks) you can buy in computer shops ("mass consumption markets") have a thermal pad which does the contact of the CPU top and the heat sinker.
Reason is simple: Such heatsinkers can get produced in masses.... making them unexpensive.

Such ones which have thermal grease are rather seldom. You'll find such heatsinkers in computers where passionated home users, technicians and/or computer modders.

How to remove thermal pads or thermal grease?
Well I prefer a piece of rag wiping away the grease with some pressure til the CPU top case is clean. Same I'm doing with the buttom of the heatsinker. To clear that aluminum or copper block a bit better, I'm moisting that rag with a bit alcohol to remove the grease.

What is recommended, a thermal pad or thermal grease?
I haven't seen any kind of thermal pads you can buy, but thermal greases. I would recommend you to buy a pad and mounting it like the producer of it recommends.

Thermal grease(s ) will be the main solution. Don't put too much of it at top of the CPU and disperse it to an uniform surface. On this surface you're mounting the cleaned heatsinker again.

There are lot of thermal greases which have added a small amount of silver, alumine or other metall dust in the grease. Well, I don't like em cause when you're putting too much of it on your CPU and your processor turns really hot (overclocking, summer heat etc) it starts dripping and metall particles on a mainboard... I think you know what will happen.
