    Windows 8.1 error 0x40017

After downloading Windows 8.1 from the Windows store I am not able to install it on my computer. When ever I start the installation then my computer will reboot with a blue screen error message and after that it will try to recover the installation but fails and then restores back the Windows 8 operating system. The main error that I am getting is listed below:

    "Couldn't update to Windows 8.1
Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.
    0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

Can anyone tell me how do I solve this problem? Thanks

Many users were facing this same error message with the blue screen of death on their pc while upgrading to Windows 8.1. For most of them, disconnecting all the unnecessary devices solved the case. Also updating the graphics card driver to the latest also did the trick. But for many this workaround doesnt work because it usually depends of the different hardware that is connected and used.

After searching for some solution I read somewhere that it is a bug problem in the driver update period of the OS installation and hence you might have to wait for some days so that Microsoft can provide a better solution for this issue. In any case, try to disconnect all the not required devices from your computer and also update all the drivers and see if that works for you.

It also seems that people who are using SteelSeries mouse and keyboard are getting this error message also. But after disconnecting the SteelSeries mouse and keyboard and also removing all its driver has solved the issue, so it definitely seems like a bug. Also, Nvidia has released a new driver version 326.01 for Windows 8.1 that you can download from the official nvidia website and test it in your pc.
