    0xc1900101 - 0x20017 error, cannot update to Windows 8.1

When I am trying to install the Windows 8.1 Preview in my computer then it gets installed in Windows Store and tells me to restart my machine. After I restart, I am immediately thrown to blue screen of death with a 0xc00000017 error code. After that when I select to "boot with another operating system" it boots successfully in Windows 8. But when I login, then I get another message that states the below:

"Sorry we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We restored your previous version of Windows to this PC 0xC1900101 - 0x20017"

Any ideas how to solve this issue?

Can you try to disconnect any external devices except for mouse and keyboard and then try to Refresh the PC and then try to install the Windows 8.1 Preview again. This same problem was happening with me and once I removed the microSD card from my machine and tried to reinstall the OS again, then it worked for me. So once you have done this steps, do let us know whether it worked for you or not.

Incase you have installed any other antivirus software on your pc, then try to disable it because it can obstruct the installation of the Windows 8.1 preview version in your pc. You can also try to clear the cache from Windows store and see if that helps. For doing the same, press Windows key + R key on your keyboard to open the Run window and then type "wsreset.exe" without the quotes and click ok and all cache in Windows store will be cleared. Hope this helps.

If the above solutions doesnt work then try to boot to Clean Boot and then try to install Windows 8.1 Preview. This Clean Boot troubleshooting is done if any third party application is causing any kind of problem, since clean boot will help in deleting software conflicts. You can follow the below steps given in the below link to start the computer in clean boot:

This problem also happens if the device drivers on your computer is not up to date. So you will need to check with Windows Update to install any latest driver updates available for any device. If no driver update is available for all devices then you will need to go to the device manufacturer's website to download its latest driver.

This error is associated with some hardware driver. Before applying the update disconnect all the connected things on your pc. Disconnect everything and leave the mouse and keyboard only. Then run it. If you are still getting the error go in Event Viewer which is located inside Control Panel > Administrative tools and copy the error description. Paste it here. The error description will put more light on the file which is causing the issue.
