I have noticed that there are lots of people who are suffering from the above mentioned problem. however many of them had been managed to resolved the matter by reinstalling the graphic card drivers. So you should reinstall the drivers and see whether it helps you out or not.

You have to take care of the thing /media/external is existing on your system. to confirm the same you have to run below mentioned command on terminal.
    Code:
    ls -la /media/external
if does not exist then you have to create the same by using
    Code:
    sudo mkdir /media/external
also try sdb1 rather than that of sdb
    Code:
    sudo mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /media/external

Well I was using GDM rather than that of GDM3 and after updating I started to face the above mentioned issue.

    • You should execute below mentioned command
    • Code:
      sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm
    • after selecting gdm as a display manager you will require to run.
    • Code:
      sudo apt-get install gdm

After learning the entire thing I recommend to remove xorg.conf (/etc/X11/xorg.cong) and see whether it is working or not. If still you are not able to make the thing working then you should simply contact technical support to get further help.
