Update Operating System of old IPod

Is there a way to update one of the early IPod's with a current version of 2.2.1 to a newer operating system so we can have access to the newer apps?

I have checked for updates but it says it is up to date. Is my only option to purchase a newer IPod?

Older ipod's cannot be upgraded to new IOS operating systems. Updated IOS version of operating system are meant for only new ipod touch and iphone's that are available in the market.
