I have an old emachines T1100 that was working fine until a few weeks ago, when it abruptly restarted and came back with this message:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
Then it says I can try to repair it with the 'original setup CD-ROM". To my recollection, XP was already installed when I got the PC, and I don't remember having a startup disc. If I did, I have long since lost it. I was able to find my emachines restore CDs, but they only give me the option of 'restoring' windows XP and erasing everything from my hard drive.
I have already tried chkdsk and restoring from a previous configuration, to no avail. Is there any way to repair windows without losing all my stuff? Where do I get the right setup CD?
