This error code is displayed whenever the drive is set to write protected. Your drive is set write protection which is not allowing copying or deleting any file on your external drive. When it is set to write protected you are just able to read or open any file i.e. you can only read and cannot perform and modification on your drive until the write permissions have been removed. So just see whether you are able to remove such permissions from your drive.

I have read your question I tried to understand the error codes of the Mac operating system and I end up with the actual cause which is giving this problem. The error code 61 is a write protection permission given to your external drive, so if you try to modify anything on your external drive then you would be displayed with this error. The reason behind this is that your external drive is having NTFS file system and you are using Mac OS and this OS can just read the NTFS file system contents but doesn’t allow you to edit it.

Re: Getting error code 61 on Mac OS

Whenever you use external drive in Mac operating system and if that drive is having NTFS file system then Mac OS would not allow you to write any content on that drive. It would allow you to access the content but no modification. So if you want to perform certain actions on your drive then you need to provide Mac Os with certain information so that it would allow you to perform changes in your external drive. This could be done by installing MacFuse along with it you need NTFS-3G driver installed on your OS. Thus this utility will allow Mac OS to read as well as write on NTFS file systems.

In order to remove this error you have to change the file system of your external drive so that the write permission error would not come again. If you change the file system to the one which is supported by Mac operating system then you won’t be getting such errors and you can also perform read as well as write on your drives. So the solution for it may be you need to reformat your drive and use the compatible file system which is supported by Mac OS.

If you want this error to be removed permanently then I recommend you to reformat your drive. Doing this would make your drive usable all the time with Mac OS. In order to reformat your drive you need to use Disk utility. Just open it and then select your external drive which you want to reformat and click on partition tab, and then change the partition to 1 so that options button would get active. Now select GUID under partition map and click ok and select Mac OS partition file system as Extended journaling as it is the default that Mac users have it and apply, thus your changes would get affected.

The reformatting option would let your error disappear permanently but it involves a risk. The major one is that if you haven’t backup your data then you would lose all your data by doing reformatting option. So have a backup of your data by plugging your drive in windows machine as it does supports NTFS file system and would allow you to have backup of it. If suppose you want to have simpler solution then you can use paragon software utility which supports many partition conversion but it is not a freely available software.
