    mac file permissions

    hi,
thanks in advance for any help you may be able to give. Have a small Mac network, with a Mac mini acting as a file repository. The files on the mini need to be shared by all the other macs on the network.
The problem is this, the users generate the files, use the apple+i to set permissions, then move the files to the repository, but then the file permissions do not allow access to other users. someone then has to go to the mini and fix the permissions for everyone before they can be accessed.

I have not delved into the problem much as yet, but it seems to me that it might be fixed by setting up groups properly? that should give all the users the same file permissions for that folder/directory and items within, correct?

any other reasons or possible fixes would be very appreciated.

thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

    Re: mac file permissions

What I think is that security is PC specific only, including the accounts. If different accounts try to access the same file structure, the other account is not recognized, and not considered valid. In that case, only a "Everyone" privilege would be allowed to access that file. As for Windows, copying files from a Mac to Windows can usually be done only via FAT32 file structures, which has no real security.
