Ubuntu 10.04 Nvidia Graphics Driver for 8800GTS issues

I have installed Linux ubuntu 10.04 32bit on my system. My main host platform is Microsoft windows 7 64-bit. My GPU is of EVGA nVIDIA Geforce 8800GTS. I am having a lot of issue installing Graphics driver. Can any one tell me how to install linux RUN Graphic card in a proper way? I have tried different ways but nothing works. If it matters, it is a virtual machine. I found on Internet that there are 3 generic drivers are available but none of them seem to work. I am just wondering does any one else has issue with drivers for nVIDIA 8800GTS when installing Ubuntu 10.04?Please provide detailed information. Thank you in advance your effort will be appreciated.

Re: Ubuntu 10.04 Nvidia Graphics Driver for 8800GTS issues

I use virtual box and my real specifications are CPU:Intel Core i7 920 D0 , PSU:Corsair, RAM:6GB triple-channel, GPU:EVGA Nvidia Geforce 8800GTS, Motherboard:ASUS amd athalon X3, SSD:Intel 80GB,HDD:Western digital 320GB which is used for virtual box OS and Virtual specification for Ubuntu- RAM:1GB, Hard disk: Dynamic storage limit is 30GB,CPU:1,Graphic:256MB.I have enabled everything for graphics and resolution is set to 800x600 top an d640x480. I am hoping for full resolution on Desktop. The virtual box says that I am using 16bit color and I don't know how to switch 32bit color. How would I get driver for my virtual Linux?

I have 9600GT which I think is same. I had to do the following to do this:
Boot from the CD and press F6 and select Nomodeset option and then reboot the system. On first boot after installation, on getting GRUB bootloader press E.Using arrow browse to and delete Quiet and splash and type Nomodeset in that place and Press Ctrl and X to boot. After I install the nVIDIA driver then it start working fine without any issue.

Re: Ubuntu 10.04 Nvidia Graphics Driver for 8800GTS issues

It usually depends on which 8800GTS as there are two versions.
    1]G80-320bit interface, 640MB and 320MB versions, 1584MHz memory, 513MHz core,1188Mhz sharders,
    2]G92-256bit interface, 1940Mhz memory,625Mhz sharders, 675Mhz core, 512MB version
9800GTX is faster than 8800GTS G92(1940Mhz memory,625Mhz sharders, 675Mhz core) but it is closest of the 9800 series.Only 9800 Graphic gards are rehash and all other level cards are new chips. And also not all 9800GTX are smaller 55nm process, 9800GTX are with 65nm process/. So you are suppose to get 9800 green or 9800GTX or GTS250 to know whether you are getting smaller 55nm process.

Sometime thing are so simple but seems to be hard. Now I am able to take my resolution to 1360x768. However my monitor support up to 1920x1080. It will be nice if I can achieve this resolution but if there is no solution to this issue then it is alright.I just enter the Fullscreen mode and then I can take it to the way to 1080p and everything is so smoother and graphics are also too good.If you modify the xorg configuration file I think then this allows you to run custom resolutions. Hopefully I am able to do the same thing with Linux Fedora. Fedora is my favorite Linux out of all available but it just has some minor application issues which causes me to use ubuntu a lot.

If you are having a decent system Fedora and most other Linux run great in virtualbox with virtual extensions enabled. If you are having any modern AMD or Intel then it should work really well. You have Intel i7 so it will work fine in both 32bit as well as 64bit mode.Fedora 12 and 13 really run beautifully in virtualbox but in this some of the drivers from Guest ISO may not always work perfectly well. You will need to do search here and there and try different versions till you do not find the one that work well together for you.I think you can try Opensuse and this will probably work for you.Hope this information is helpful to you.

Re: Ubuntu 10.04 Nvidia Graphics Driver for 8800GTS issues

Well I am going to stuck to the Gnome Desktop as it is much easier to run on it. And I don't need to run relatively because that means I need to reboot the computer so that I get in my other Operating system. I have restarted my windows 7 every two weeks I want it to be virtualized so that I can use it whenever I want without reboot. Each of my operating system I use for different purpose. I use windows 7 as my primary operating system which host to virtual application, then the next priority I give to windows xp for testing new application and I use Linux for fun so that I can learn it in much better way I would most likely want to use it and learn it
