Trying to set up Dual Boot USB Pendrive

I have tried this for many days. I even went and tried around many different setups. After trying hard for these many days yet did not got the result. I am ready with a FAT32 USB. I have installed Knoppix to it. I have done this using the normal Knoppix menu method. This works great. Knoppix uses SYSLINUX as bootmgr. On the USB stick, I want to integrate BartPE. I have image created called PartBE.iso. Now in order to boot in the RAM, the image resides in /bartpe/bartpe.iso, which I think is necessary. I tried following many tutorials but nothing seemed to work. Can anyone please tell me a way of getting this stuff to work?

However, I manged to perform this using Grub4dos. Install the Grub in your USB stick. Extract the files from the .iso to a sub- folder. After all this you managed to do, then edit the grub's menu.lst. Grub's menu.lst is edited to point to each bootdisk's kernel and intrid. Initial ramdisk is a temporary file system used in the boot process of the Linux kernel. initrd and initramfs refer to slightly different schemes for loading this file system into memory. Both are commonly used to make preparations before the real root file system can be mounted.

If you are not able to work your problem out using "Knoppix" or "Grub", then you can go for the uNetBootin. UNetbootin allows you to create bootable Live USB drives for Ubuntu, Fedora, and other Linux distributions without burning a CD. It runs on both Windows and Linux. You can either let UNetbootin download one of the many distributions supported out-of-the-box for you, or supply your own Linux .iso file. Re: Trying to set up Dual Boot USB Pendrive

I am here to describe how to install Ubuntu by copying the contents of the installation CD to an USB memory stick and making the stick bootable. Just follow the following steps:
    1. On the root directory of your USB device, create a folder “install”.
    2. Copy the installer kernel and the initramdisk into this folder.
    3. Download source for the installer kernel and initramdisk. Also download the files “vmlinux” and “initrd.gz”.
    4. Make sure that you have the installer that fits the architecture of your Ubuntu version you want to install.
    5. From the installation iso image downloaded, copy the folder “isolinux” to the root directory of your USB device.
    6. Rename “isolinux” into “syslinux”. Go inside the directroy “syslinux”. There, rename the file “isolinux.cfg” into “syslinux.cfg”.
    7. Make the stick bootable: Use fdisk to set the boot flag.
    8. Install syslinux using this command:sudo aptitude install syslinux
    9. Use syslinux to install a boot sector on your USB device - sudo syslinux /dev/sdbX
    10. Copy the Ubuntu CD image in the root directory of your USB device.

    There you go. Try it.

Re: Trying to set up Dual Boot USB Pendrive

I am using VMWare with Jaunty as guest and Wndows XP as the host. A desktop is running Windows Server 2008 and want to dual boot it and for that I am trying a bootable pendrive. When I was over with creating the bootable stick, it is not working when I put it in the desktop to boot and I do not know the reason for that. Any help in this context will be very much appreciated. Should I go for Unetbootin? Thanks in advance.

Unetbootin is really very fast and easy to use. UNetbootin(Universal Netboot Installer) is a cross-platform utility. It is used to create Live USB systems. It can also load a variety of system utilities or install various Linux distributions and other operating systems without a CD.
