Windows Server 2008 R2 maximum NTFS volume size

I have use NTFS file systems that used by Windows organize my hard drive based on the size of clusters (or allocation units ) , it represents the minimum amount of disk space that can be allocated to hold a file. Therefore , when the size of a file does not match a multiple of the cluster size , extra space must be used to hold the file (until next multiple of the cluster size. I want to know that what is the maximum NTFS in Windows Server 2008 R2volume size. Please help.

Re: Windows Server 2008 R2 maximum NTFS volume size

We have reserved a space of 100 MB on a 3 discs total capacity of 4GB. We will therefore create a volume size of 300 MB The remaining space on each disk can be used to create other volumes . It should then format the volume with a system particular file . In the case of a volume , Windows Server 2003 features only the NTFS file system . (By cons , we can format Partitions created on ' hard base 'with the FAT file system , FAT32 or NTFS ).

In the case of a striped volume , the allocation unit size is the size occupied by at least one file, but also the size of segments that will be distributed among the disks of the volume. The size of allocation units is a multiple of the size a hard disk sector ( 512 bytes ) . It is between 512 bytes ( 1 sector ) and 65536 bytes (128 sectors of 512 bytes each). For NTFS the default size of allocation units is 4096 bytes.

Re: Windows Server 2008 R2 maximum NTFS volume size

If the volume receives a large number of requests for files small ( if it hosts an HTTP server instance ) , it will be useful choose a small size for the allocation units (512 bytes , 1024 bytes or 2048 bytes ). In contrast , in the case of a file server that contains example images of CDs or RIS images , one for large allocation units is recommended (eg 16, 32 or 64K ). Other options you can select on this window are activation of the compression of files and folders and selection quick format . You can also name the volume. It may be noted that the Compressing files and folders is possible only on volumes with allocation units whose size is less than or equal to 4096 bytes.

You must select the number of disks. However , for RAID 1 ( mirroring or volume ) , Windows Server 2003 limits the number of discs 2. He must choose two discs size and the volume will occupy on each disk . In this example, creates a volume of 50 MB which means that 50 MB will be used on each discs to create the mirror. The final stages of the configuration is identical to that of RAID 0 ( name volume, cluster size , choose the drive letter , ...) . At time it completes the synchronization wizard takes place between the two disks, then formatting is done ( if you chose to format the disk of course).

Re: Windows Server 2008 R2 maximum NTFS volume size

The size of the maximum NTFS volume is 264-1 beams. However, the size of the maximum NTFS volume as implemented in the Windows XP Professional is 232-1 beams. For example, using 64 KiB beams , the size of the maximum NTFS volume is 256 TiB without KiB 64 . Using the default cluster size of 4 KiB , the size of the maximum NTFS volume is 16 TiB minus 4 KiB . Because partition tables on the main hard disk boot record (MBR) only support partition sizes up to 2 TB , dynamic or GPT volumes should be used to create bootable NTFS volumes over 2 TB.
